The Modern – Bar Room
“The petite Modern Cheesecake with Almond Crumble, Raspberry and 'fromage blanc' sorbets is so pretty it deserves a place inside MoMA.”
“For a starter, Tarte Flambee Alsatian thin crust tart with crème fraîche, onion, and applewood-smoked bacon is an absolute must-try dish.”
“- pistachio dark chocolate dome – loved the bitterness of the dark chocolate, paired with the richness of the pistachio!”

Beautiful space, and an easier option than the dining room to drop in for drinks or food. The feel is very swanky, and it's a fun place to play dress up and people watch after browsing the Moma. The drinks are pricey and the food is very French, but for the right the occasion it is the perfect spot.
Popped in for an after-work first date here. Sat at the bar – the place was very crowded but we were able to find a spot at the end.
I enjoyed a Harvest Punch, which was sweet (Bourbon, Pear Brandy, Spiced Apple Cider, Cardamaro, $18), and a Diplomat, which was more my scene, very boozy (Rye, Oloroso Sherry, Benedictine, Maple, Scotch Rinse, $20). After cocktails, I had a glass of Bordeaux – it was tight at first (freshly opened bottle) but settled in nicely.
Service was a little aloof – mostly appreciated, because you had privacy, but then I had to do a little eye-chasing to place subsequent orders. Nothing terrible though.
The vibe of the Bar Room is buzzy, sexy, and busy yet still moderately intimate. Would look forward to coming back again for dinner!
Price-y pick, but a nice little hideaway at the museum for a cocktail and a bite should you choose to indulge pre or post a little visit, or just want somewhere a little upscale in this neighborhood. Elegant, gracious service, spacious interior, sexy bar.
Came in for drinks and apps before watching Wicked with another couple. Everything we had was amazing and service was outstanding.
We ordered the steak tartare, crab fritters, fried oysters and black truffle cavatelli. All were amazing but one we all agreed stood out was the black truffle dish. It was very flavorful. In second was the steak tartare.
We also ordered drinks, two of which were extra dirty grey goose martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives. They said they suggest a particular blue cheese they serve with what I believe was said to be bay leaf in the cheese. Probably the best martini we had ever because of that recommendation.
To go back to the service which was fantastic, our server accidentally spilled one of the martinis on to the table. No one got really wet and we all understood it happens. They apologized twice and offered to bring over a fresh one but it was okay and a lot was in the glass. At the end of the night, they brought the check over, apologized again and comped the drinks.
I wish we had time to try the dinner entrees but will definitely be back next time!
This is one of the best bar/lounge rooms of a fine dining restaurant in New York City, and they take reservations to boot! Its large enough to stand as its own restaurant, and it's great when you arent in the mood for a full prix fixe meal.
My boyfriend and I ordered tapas style and shared four or five dishes. Each was delicious, unique, and perfect for sharing.
It was my first time at the Bar Room, yet the waiter asked me, "am I correct that you have a peanut allergy?" I was astonished– Ive never dined here, didnt make notes in the reservation.. So how did he know? The waiter mentioned that because Ive dined at other Danny Meyers restaurants in the past, theyve made a note of it. Ive read "Setting the Table" so I should have known; but nonetheless, kudos to the great hospitality and the delicious meal.
Cant wait to come back!!
EPIC. Phenomenal staff. Josh (sommelier) was superb. Excellent combination of wonderful personality and exceptional knowledge. Steve (our waiter) was on point all evening. Couldn't ask for a better team serving us. As for the food… It's The Modern… A Danny Meyer Union Square spot with Abram Bissell at the wheel. Go, eat and enjoy… You will love it. Pastry Chef Jiho Kim over delivered as well, sending over amazing creations that put a smile on my daughters face, who is pastry interning at Meyers Grammercy Tavern. Some notable moments: the king crab fritters, black truffle cavatelli, foie gras with spiced peanuts, marinated hamachi… Lobster ravioli and sea bass were wonderful but if you eat meat, go for the brioche fried chicken and filet en croutes, as both were over the top phenomenal. Daughters dessert pics were the semolina pudding and chocolate crunch beignets. I fell in love with the key lime pie sundae. Kim sent the pineapple tart, which was to die for… as well as the chocolate Napoleon, and coconut sorbet shumai (awesome)… And we also picked at the pear Charlotte. A bit of an over order again, (we do that a lot) but had to taste so many things 🙂 check out the pics… They explain everything !
Go-eat-enjoy… It's starred for good reason!
My new fiancé and I went here to celebrate a night out in New York City and have dinner before we saw a Broadway play. Immediately after entering, you are overcome by a modern and comfortable atmosphere. The service was impeccable as was the food and drink. As a heads up, the menu is a little smaller than most, however, every single thing we had was delicious. We had the salmon sliders for an appetizer and somehow the poppy seed bun combined with the salmon and toppings was an incredible combination. Granted, we only had two but they were both equally savored. For dinner, I had the lobster ravioli garnished with peas and a carrot vinaigrette. I was incredibly skeptical of the carrot sauce but again, somehow, it was wonderful. I cleaned my plate yet again. They have an incredibly extensive wine and drinks menu and I highly suggest taking advantage of it. This place is pricey so I wouldn't come here every night but I would come here every chance I could for a celebratory dinner.
Currently my favorite bar.. they had the Pappy 20 yr for $60/2oz.. bummer that sold out.
great space, decor, and solid drinks.
