The Otheroom
“This dark smallish bar on the far west outskirts of the west village has a great crowd, friendly bartenders, and a great ipod.”
“I went there on a Friday night, looking for a cozy after dinner date spot but nothing sleazy as many cozy bars are.”
“Assuming the music is a bit quieter around 6/7/8pm, I'd say this would be a good "let's go here after our 2nd date dinner for a night cap" date spot.”

I went to a friend's birthday party here on a Saturday afternoon and I liked it a lot. Very cozy, nice beer list and friendly bartender.
They have a very nice lounge-type area in the back but even the front part is nice, with a cool bar and a high banquette against the wall.
Only weird thing was that it was super dark in there! My eyes are not the best but the back part of the bar was almost pitch black. I could barely recognize some of my friends. Luckily I was able to use my experience as the lead in an all-male performance of "The Miracle Worker" during middle school as a way to identify people by touching their faces.
Now THIS is where you bring a sultry date. The lighting is dim and romantic, the tables are high-topped with comfy lounge-like seating, and the bar is, well, just as sexy. Came here on a Thursday and was surprised and relieved to see it wasn't too crowded.
We ordered a few glasses of red wine and just enjoyed the ambiance. What more is there to say?
Dark. Sultry. Low-key. I'm in.
I love the quaint-ness of the West Village, so after an amazing dinner at Malatesta Trattoria, Yelp helped us discover The Otheroom, a wine bar/lounge just a few blocks away.
Find a selection of wine, craft beers, exposed brick, booth seating, bar seating. On this particular low-key Tuesday night, they appeared to have a mix of couples and small groups. Music was on point.
A dark, candle-lit, out-of-the way bar with an excellent soundtrack loud enough to hear but not loud enough to force you to shout, an excellent beer list–draft and bottled, big labels and craft alike–and a nicely-sized wine list. No liquors, no TVs.
There's bar seating, a number of high tables suitable for 2-4 people, and some cushiony sofa-ish seating in a back room. If you've ever been to the original The Room, off Houston and now sadly closed, you'll be familiar with this and not disappointed.
I came here one weekday evening with friends, but it seemed most of the folks already here were couples or first dates. I'd say it's almost ideal for a date, but, given the strength of its soundtrack and beer list, it's good for just friendly hang-outs too. (And there's a happy hour special, though its details escape me at the moment.)
Great date spot, but only if you really like your date. If you *don't* like your date that much, it'll be awkward for you here. Perfect space for getting drunk and making out. If you have any question about that, don't go here, because you will likely find yourself smooching in the corner with said date. It is a small venue. It is cozy. It is very dark. It has comfy corner make-out sofas. And the drinks are very potent.
As a fan of Anotheroom in Tribeca, I thought it was time for me to try The Otheroom on a fairly low-key date night. As the crowds in New York have left me jaded about bars in the city, I was very appreciative of the vibe at the Otheroom: chill, not crowded, yet still somewhat active. I guess it's a function of being all the way near Washington Street. I will say, at night, it is DARK in here. You can forget taking pictures of how much fun you're having here, because it's just not gonna work, and using flash is a good way to get everyone to hate you, real fast. I don't know if they just dimmed the lights a lot lower that night, but it was a bit of struggle sometimes to see the menu, or say, the person sitting next to you. That being said, with the darkened ambiance and alcohol flowing, it can get rull sexy up in this joint. Heh.
The menu consists nothing but beer and wine, so this isn't the place to get cocktails. That being said, they do have a fairly extensive draft and bottle list, and everything is reasonably priced. Since I really like red ales, I went with Sixpoint Global Warmers for most of the night, which were great, and she went with Malbecs until also settling a little into the beer menu as well. On a side note, I noticed that the menu had a couple pumpkin beers and had a slight "oh, crap" moment. Given that it's still late summer, it was a haunting realization that fall was creeping up and that the pumpkin-flavored everythings would soon be upon us. Yikes.
Given that the space isn't the biggest, the service was pretty efficient about refilling drinks and collecting the glasses. I'm intrigued to see what this place is like in the day time, so I'll have to come back and try the version of the bar with lighting.
In all, this might not be a "destination" for most, but for those who live in the area, it's an amazing place for those date nights you want to go out but you don't want to go "out." I'm very happy to live close by and will no doubt be back. Keep it simple, stupid.
Came here for a friend's birthday. Really nice ambiance, however I think it's just a little too dark. The space is tight, and there are one – two couches in the back area. I feel like it's trying to implore the possibility of becoming a speakeasy, but can't decide if it wants to (personally, I think it should!). The service is good, and it's in a great spot. I like that they have a little outdoor area; when we were there, there was a goodbye party going on – not sure if they had it "reserved" or if they managed to take over everything.
Stopped by just for a quick two drinks before heading to dinner. Empty at 5:30 but blonde bartender from Michigan was super friendly and helpful. Nice quaint little joint. If I am ever in the area, would def love to stop by again.
