My roommate's response to the recent twin polar vortexes has been to get a large comforter from her bed, log into my Netflix account and get nonstop delivery to avoid leaving the apartment.
So for the past couple weekends, the Sandwich Shop delivery man has been showing up at the door twice a day.
Yesterday, I decided to head out over to the store to see it how stood up to real, in person dinners.
It's a small place, just a half-down stool counter, a brightly lit space of white brick tiles covering each wall. I imagine they are largely staying in business on the basis on deliveries, but that doesn't mean the dine-in place isn't inviting.
I went with the "El Latino" – essentially a pernil sandwich, with pickled onions, fresh tomatoes, chimichurri, olive oil, pepper and salt. The onions and chimichurri came on the side, while the rest were mixed in.
It was a relatively simple sandwich, but each element stood out. Even the olive oil, which the menu promised was extra virgin, had the right flavor.
The portions were hearty but not gut busting. I finished my sandwich, but didn't think I should I have supplemented with the turkey chili or lentil sides. That's probably for the best, because at $10.75, the sandwiches are priced a little aggressively for the neighborhood.
I'm with that though, because the Sandwich Shop is a bit aspirational, a bit like the neighborhood we're building, even if sometimes the weather means we don't want to leave the house to get it.
