You either love diners or hate them.
This place doesn't hold a candle to places in the Jers, but for Manhattan it's pretty bloody great.
This place though is hard to not like… at least a little bit. It's the perfect size, has a nice array of outdoor tables, and the food is cheap and delicious.
I was in the area running an errand and the store I had to go to was not yet opened. I did not have breakfast so I stopped here. It was very good. I was seated immediately and ordered breakfast food-two eggs over, bacon, rye toast and coffee. it is reasonably priced and the staff is very accommodating. I would recommend and return.
This is the closest I have to a neighborhood diner, and I try to take advantage of its presence as often as possible. They make a great chocolate egg cream (one of the few pregnancy cravings I've been having lately). I also really like their omelettes (how many diners do you know of that offer goat cheese in their breakfast items?) and BEC's (that's bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches). I love the fruit salad, which is always fresh and abundant with a variety of fruit, and the pancakes are huge and fluffy.
As for other meals, I make it a point never to order dinner from a diner, but their lunch options are on the money: perfect grilled cheese sandwiches and turkey clubs with fresh turkey, crispy bacon, and fresh lettuce and tomato. Nice variety of burgers and Greek fare, too.
The prices are a bit heftier here than you'd find at a run-of-the-mill diner, but hey, that's the West Village for you! Staff is really nice and the Den is never lacking in patrons.
Nice dinner with efficient service. The lunch specials come with a giant bowl of soup and 1 soda. Remember only the first soda is free.
When in need of comfort cuisine with my mom at St. Vincent's we headed here. This place just looks like a good old school diner. Corner loc. with comphy booths, homey decor- with a mural of the last supper that includes NY characters like the Yankees old manager Joe Torre.
The service here could not have been nicer or more generous- telling us that soft drinks were included with our lunch special.
$9.95 for a beef gyro with salad, tzatziki, fries and a seafood bisque soup. Fries were tasty though food was definitely old school, you could see why this place looks so beloved.
This place is basically a diner, so order what you'd like from a diner menu (not some fancy challah french toast dish – which was bland and blah). The egg salad sandwich was great. The staff was friendly, and they have cosy booths, and it had a very comfy diner atmosphere.
Nothing special about the Village Den. It's your typical diner. I've went here once but decided not to return due to the fact that nothing was special about the place. The food was okay (I could've cooked better at home). My father has had soups from here on multiple occasions and agrees it is basic diner food at premium prices.
