Maria M. orchestrated a get-together for the Yelp cohorts to dine at TCA one rainy night a few months ago. Til this day, I am still thinking about the delicious meal I was able to share with my Yelp friends. It was quite the trek getting to this restaurant, but the food is truly worth it. You don't have to get on a plane and travel thousands of miles to Guatemala, all you need is the F train and a metro card.
That said, we shared several dishes, but my absolute favorites were the YUCA CON CHICHARRON (Yuca root plant with cubes of fried pork rinds), and the CALDO DE RES (beef soup with rice & tortillas). Their corn tamales and horchata drink were also very pleasant. Others really enjoyed the "Papusas" but my palate had not warmed up to it.
But I would implore anyone interested in coming to this restaurant, that if you had to order just one thing, let it be the "Caldo de Res" ($10.00) this soup was amazing and tasted like someone's grandmother stood over the stove preparing it the entire day. The clear broth soup was full-bodied with so much flavor from all the ingredients that went into the soup as well as the richness from the beef. When eaten with rice, this became a completely delicious and unbeatable combination. I would gladly make that 1 hour and 20 minute trek again to Tierras Centro Americanas just for this dish alone. The chicharron was another standout as it was cooked perfectly – crunchy, yet still tender when bitten into, and there was not much fat which is how I like to eat chicharron.
The space itself is quaint and has that old world charm to it, but it is comfortable and there are plenty of seats to fit a group of 10 or more. The service is quite efficient though on a really busy day, don't expect speed to be a prominent trait. Otherwise, everything about this restaurant is just lovely. And again, get the Caldo de Res, it will be the best (Food) decision you make in your life!
I love Yelp. Special thanks to Maria M for introducing me to Guatemalan food.
YUM YUM YUM!!
Memorable dishes include Chile Rellenos, and Pupusas.
My favorite is the Caldo des Res (beef soup)!
Can't even front in this review, I'm Cuban and when it comes to Latin American restaurants I'm very picky. I mainly stick to Cuban, Dominican and Colombian spots. My friend tricked me into coming here since we were both hungry from traveling. Ok so here's how it went, I definitely got some looks coming in there, since this is a Guatemalteco y Salvadoreano spot.
Nevertheless they were respectful and friendly, from ordering to preparing our food in a timely manner. I had yuca y chicharron , which was cooked well and tasted fresh. But honestly I enjoyed the Chiles rellenos, that was the star out of everything I had. The price range was good, not too bad for a Guatemalan restaurant.
Added bonus the waitress was good, can't remember her name but she really took care of us.
Thanks to my friends I may have to come here again soon, when I'm finally off my diet for real lol.
My friends and I came here prior to a trip to Guatemala several months ago, and discovered this place thanks to Yelp. It's as authentic as it gets with no-frills, homey decor and our server spoke little to no English. We managed to get by with what broken Spanish we knew between all of us (same went for our time in Guatemala). I ordered the Enchilada De Carne, Tamales De Elote, and Platanos Fritos Con Crema, all of which were so good and surprisingly filling for appetizers. If this restaurant were located in my neighborhood, I'd undoubtedly be a regular.
BEST SPANISH FOOD EVER. Hands down. I might have to go through all my reviews and drop a star from every place I've ever been to, just so this place can have its full 5 stars.
GET THE PUPUSAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Prices are outrageously amazingly affordable, especially for the huge portions. I hope they don't read this review and start raising the prices.
GET THE PUPUSAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really liked the chicken tamales, and they were HUGE. I expected some wimpy chicken thing. But no. For 2 bucks, they were FANTASMIC.
GET THE PUPUSAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Working in Jamaica for two years, I've never realized there was a Guatemalan restaurant here by Hillside Avenue until this day. A friendly Latino restaurant, albeit a bit intimidating if you don't speak Spanish (yes, it's that local). Came in on a UYE by the lovely Maria, we ordered family style and the food was enough to last me through a hibernation. The Hilachas were unfortunately out, but we made do!
– Chile Rellenos – stuffed peppers. As a pleasant surprise, it was not spicy, but deliciously savory.
– Pupusas de Queso – Cheesy and yummy. Came with dipping sauce.
– Tamales – good. I don't know why, but Latino tamales tastes better than the Chinese ones.
– Yuca con Chicarron – Savory deep-fried pork fat with dried fried yuca. Delicious combo, though I worry about my cholesterol.
– Caldo des Res – hands down the best Latino beef soup I've ever tasted. Perfectly salted, great with rice.
– Mora – that's blackberry juice. Sooo good. Get it before they run out.
