Thanks to Kenny C's review, we decided to take the leap last Friday and give this place a try. As Kenny mentioned prior, from the outside, the overall environment looked inviting with the dark wooden booths; the last reminisce of the steakhouse that was there prior.
We entered the restaurant and motioned that we wanted to sit in one of these booths, and we did. The booth was very comfortable, and we had plenty of room if we were a party of four. The service staff was pretty attentive for a Chinese restaurant (in comparison to what I'm used to in Chinatown) and we got waters in plastic cups. I guess we needed to ask for tea, but we never did.
For starters, again, thanks to Kenny, we had the curry fish balls – these are delicious! The curry they were submerged in had a great Indian flavor to them, and there were about a good eight or so balls in the plate; excellent choice to start.
The menu for the entrees was tough to decide on, since there was a lot of options, but I opted for the grilled eel over rice, and my other half got beef chow fun. The turnaround time from the time the order was placed until we got the plates in front of us was quick for 7PM at night on a Friday; and we weren't the only ones in the place! The grilled eel was the freshest I've ever had anywhere, and the eel sauce was delicately drizzled over the eel and the bed of white rice. The beef chow fun was good! The onions blended well into the noodles that you couldn't tell which was which; my babe loved this and I agreed. The portions were American big, and I honestly didn't mind at that point, since we were starving. Really great food; we look forward to working through the menu soon!
Remember when this place was that "steakhouse"? Under new management, this place has shed the terrible food and bad service. There's nothing, but good food, decent prices and friendly service. Hong Kong style food, they got it down, better than those other restaurants with anything HK related in their names. Tried a couple things here, but I recommend the curry, so good!
I think what sets this place apart is that they actually care about how the food tastes when paired with different sides or sauces. Depending on what you order, they make the flavors right so it's not just about completing the order. Fresh ingredients made right! On top of that, decent prices? Yes. I can see myself a frequent customer here, especially since lazy days are for eating out. I recommend giving this place a try!
The best part of living in a neighborhood with a large Chinese population is that you get these kind of spots. Places that steer away from the Americanized Chinese food we grew up on, not that those places are bad mind you, they are really good, however sometimes I like the old horizons broadened.
So this place is where the old Legends was and I must admit Legends never spoke to me, the many B ratings and the grimy look from outside plus bad Yelp reviews made me steer clear. So one day Im on Yelp and see a good looking review for this place and realized it had taken over for legends. Grabbed a lengthy take out menu and stored it away. Today I gave them a shot. Now first off the "roast or BBQ" section on the menu is no longer being served, something about they dont have a roaster anymore so no Soy Sauce Chicken for me.
They did however have the reason I came and thats the Ox Tail in Curry Sauce over Rice. I am a lover of Ox Tail and always get happy when I see it on a menu. This was a nice version, good meaty pieces with a very rich Curry sauce with carrots and potatoes. One of the best Asian Ox Tail dishes I have had (69 Bayards secret off menu is the best) and for just 6.75 this was a bargain.
Not having the Chicken I wanted I tried the Baked Mussel in garlic and this was one of those odd dishes you dont see anywhere, several quite large mussels with a creamy, cheesy sauce on them over mashed potatoes. Very odd for my Western tastes, not bad but not sure I would order it again.
They also gave me a Borscht soup (this places menu is wild and hey theres alot of Russians in Bensonurst) which I wasnt that crazy about but hey it was free. I will be back to try one of the other about 250 items on this large menu.
Stopped by for lunch and it was ok I guess…My party of 3 arrived at around 12 and there were very few people eating inside but it did get busier later on. The atmosphere gave off really weird vibes in my opinion. The decor is kind of dreary and didn't really fit the style of typical Westernized Cantonese restaurants. We chose to sit in one of the elevated booths but the path to get in was so narrow! Even if you're like 1 pound overweight you would have a difficult time squeezing into one of the booths! I would say the service was less than average. They weren't exactly nice and I almost had to flag one of the waiters down for more water since it was really hot in there and the AC must've been set on "super low" or something lol…
Baked Portuguese chicken over rice- The dish that I use to judge these types of Cantonese restaurants and this one was just meh. It wasn't really flavorful and some of the rice was overcooked. I wasn't really a fan of the chicken either since it was flavorless. The 1-2 pieces of potatoes in the entire dish were too mushy and weren't baked properly. M Star Cafe in Chinatown still wins!
Fried rice- Ehh it was alrightt. I didn't like the ham that they use since it tasted like spam. I've definitely had better fried rice elsewhere.
Baked pork cutlet over spaghetti with white sauce- This looked kind of unappetizing when it arrived but it ended up being really tasty! The pork cutlet was delicious and the spaghetti tasted great with the white sauce!
There are at least 10 Cantonese restaurants within a 5 block radius from Ting Fai on 86th Street and I would recommend going to one of those instead. While this one wasn't horrible, it didn't meet my expectations or stand out enough to have me wanting to come back.
There is an abundance of HK style food going up and down 86th street these days in Brooklyn. I came here looking to grab a quick bite while working and it's pretty much standard fare for the area. The place is clean and updated with a standard HK style teahouse menu which includes noodles, rice dishes and HK style western food like baked spaghetti, etc.
The service was a bit slow and they seemed to not have the best control over the kitchen since my food came out after many guests who had come after me. The flavors were decent, on par with other similar restaurants in Brooklyn and Chinatown. It's not a bad choice if you're in the area but there is a good amount of competition down the street.
This place used to be Legend Steakhouse. They did almost no renovations to the interior, but they revamped the menu significantly. There's now a bunch more dishes, chef's specials, and appetizers.
If you like curry fishballs, definitely order them here. They're not the skewered kind with just a little bit of sauce drizzled on top. You get fishballs and chunks of potato in a bowl of curry. The curry is fragrant and somewhat spicy as well.
We also got baked mussels. They were halved on the shell, with melted cheese on top. Very tasty.
For my entree, I had the Portuguese style baked chicken over rice. I'd had it here back when it was Legend, and it tasted about the same, which isn't a bad thing. Huge portions too for super cheap.
Will definitely be returning to Ting Fai!
Mediocre food. Got Mei fun with chicken steak. It's pretty plain. The chicken steak was fat, had to rip the fat off one by one. The service was pretty bad-it's like they don't even want to serve us and since it's so tight everywhere, you might get bumped by people or workers because I know I did.
Husband and I went out on date and decided to give the local chinese a try. Seems legit. Lots of local people eating there. I wish I knew what to order. It's hard to order if you don't read chinese or have tried really authentic chinese food. I suggest asking questions. We wanted to order a few things but they were not available.
I had Singapore style noodles absolutely delicious. I know that next time I would order a rice order, a vegetable dish even maybe some steak we saw lots of delicious food on other tables but couldn't figure out what they were. So point, not rudely, and figure it out if you don't know what to get!
It's yummmmy
