Tinga Taqueria
“It's BYOB and they will even make you a frozen margarita if you bring tequila.”
“This place is really good — I've been to all 3 locations (Millburn, Montclair & Westfield) and they're totally consistent.”
“The Montclair one is excellent but very crowded and it's brutal to park in Upper Montclair.”

Casual place with sidewalk seating. Server was quirky/silly, which some might not appreciate, though I enjoyed his goofy antics. The food was not bad and reasonably priced. The guac was actually some of the best that I've tried (my parents agreed). The blackened catfish tacos were lacking the kick/spiciness that characterizes blackened anything. Nonetheless, the food was very fresh tasting and not drenched in grease or over-salted as typically done with Mexican cuisine.
The food here is pretty good and the service is friendly (and patient!). While it's not my favorite Mexican restaurant of all time, it's one of the only ones nearby and gets the job done. Super causal and inexpensive, they are also very kid friendly (they even have kids events during the week, though I've never been). Their fajita in a burrito is a fun, filling (seriously, it's ginormous!) alternative to a regular burrito or fajita (no fajitas on the menu) and I've enjoyed some of their specials like the tacos carnitas. The guacamole is good – soft and creamy – but this isn't the place where they make it at your table or anything fancy like that. Tinga is BYOB which is cool, but they only serve frozen margaritas from those machines. And stay away from the empanadas. I think they're from some frozen food aisle. All in all, if you need to get your Mexican food fix on, Tinga can make it happen.
My cuz goes here constantly. She loves it. So I finally had an oppty to meet up with her and we went here.
Her son ordered shrimp quesadilla. Lots of shrimp and good size even for a kid menu.
My daughter had shrimp avocado salad with what must have been close to 2 whole avocados.
She said it was absolutely delicious.
My cousin has chicken tacos with bbq sauce and I had a bite quite delicious.
Hubby had chicken tinga burrito. Extremely large and he said just ok.
I had steak tacos and well just ok sums that up.
The tacos are soft taco with steak in the bottom. very very little steak. Covered in a ton Of lettuce and some tomato salsa. and then inside a hard shell taco. Makes eating a lot easier.
Frankly just ok. Service was really good. Folks are great. They make virgin cocktails and you can byob and add to it.
ATTENTION SINGLE/DIVORCED WOMEN: Wednesday nights at Tinga are for you! My lovely companion and I noticed a plethora of men, none of whom were wearing wedding rings dining at Tinga last night with their children. As any of us who have been on the divorce boat know, Wednesday night is daddy night and it would appear that all of Millburn's Wednesday night daddys go to Tinga.
Anyway, why wouldn't they? I have been hearing about Tinga's various location from several friends with varying degrees of enthusiasm; all quite positive. So last night we decided to give them a whirl. The place is veeeeery casual and very relaxed. Staff, while attentive, is not at all overbearing. We ordered beef fajitas which were delicious. Meat was on the dry side which may not be everyone's preference but it is mine. Rice was scrumptious, tortillas were epic although, being on the frigging low carb thing meant just a taste of each. Chips and salsa were…well chips and salsa. Yummy, fresh and delicious.
Choices in Mexican restaurants are generally geographically dictated. There really are fewer of them than just about every other type of eating establishment. I can't really think of too many towns with more than one of them. Luckily, people in Millburn and the surrounding vicinity can choose to go to Tinga. Casual, inexpensive and delicious. The big 3 to me. Dos thumbs up.
I am surprised I have yet to review this place. There are only a few Mexican joints around so we came here for a quick lunch. Bland and very uninteresting food. Portioned for dieting Millburn house wives. It's OK if you have a hankering for Mexican in town and do not feel like going further. It isn't terrible, but could be better. They do have $5 burritos though =)
Staff was pleasant and very helpful.
Really yummy fresh Mexican food. They had great vegetarian options, which is a rarity and a huge plus. Veggie chili on the nachos–yes, please! My portobella mushroom burrito with beans and rice was delicious. It was enormous and I had the rest the next day–even tastier leftover mmmmmm.
It can be noisy in here, music playing, and lots of kids aka very family friendly. Just so's ya know.
Good Mexican food with great service.
Food is typical Mexican fare. Chips are brought to table when you sit. Menu has lots of choices but no need to choose anything but their burrito's. All are big and good. Pay extra for their delicious guac.
The server we had the last time we went was fantastic! Funny and friendly.
It's a BYOB and be forewarned, lots of children fill this place up with their parents so it can get loud.
Only item I would improve is the churros. They were ok.
Street parking and their are a couple of lots that are a short walk away. ENJOY!
After a not-so-satisfying dinner at a sushi restaurant, we went to Tinga for another entree. I've passed by this place many times, looked sort of cool but never walked in until last night. Laid back, indie cafe looking Mexican joint. I ordered two tacos, rice and beans.
The only real issue was the meat, too sweet. I asked the server if they put Mexican cinnamon or sugar in the seasoning, he asked the kitchen and they did use cinnamon. i know some regions in Mexico do this but I personally think it adds nothing and takes away from a good savory taco.
He offered to take it off the menu, and since that was all I ordered, I could walk away. But I said to charge me because that's the way the house makes it and as a diner I should take the hit. The taco itself was fine. However, as a suggestion to the owner/chef, you should describe the taco as being "sweetened with cinnamon" or something like that on the menu. Sweet taco meat is a departure from the norm and if the purpose of the description is to describe, then this is an important note. Mind you, it wasn't overbearing, just not to my liking. Maybe chef Rick Bayless, the king of fine Mexican cooking in the US, would disagree.
If they ever offer a non sweet version, I'll definitely go back.
