OOOOOHHHH EEEEMMM GEEEEE
SO I have been recommended to go to this place for some YEARS now, but being that I live in Brooklyn and it is DEEP in Queens this never happened. Finally a few weeks ago some friends and I drove out and my life became a little more whole.
For anyone who know me, knows I LOVE Latin food, and Mexican is my favorite. Finding authentic and delicious Mexican food is harder then you would think in this melting pot of New York City. It's often fused with some disgusting hip trend…like kale ( Looking at you Chelsea and TriBeCa) .
Tortilleria Nixtamal AMAZING and traditional all the way around, from food and drinks. I had the tacos,a combination of chicken and fish, absolutely delicious. My friend had the tostados which sh also enjoyed.
All plates were damn near licked clean. for dessert we had tres lech cake. though it was not my favorite , it was still pretty good.
I would recommend this place to anyone in the area or anyone is search of some great traditional Mexican food.
Nice location.. Not far from the park. The place has a nice decor when you walk inside . The waitress was nice . Can't remember her name. The drink was good! Ordered a passion fruit margarita. My daughter had a steak, pork and a shrimp taco. She like the steak. I ordered the frijoles, shrimp and a nopal tacos. The three were delicious. The wait was a little longer than expected but the food was delicious. Ordered the guacamole with chips. It was delicious. Will definitely be passing by again when I'm in the area.
Gems like these are what makes NYC so great. This place is a hole in the wall in the middle of a residential area in Corona. They make their own taco shells here which are amazing!! Corn tacos beat flour tacos all day. There were probably about 10 tables in the whole place but there's a bench outside of you would like to dine al fresco. The service was quick and friendly and they came up to us minutes after we sat down. So if you're pressed on time when you want to catch the mets game, this place is pretty good.
For drinks my boyfriend ordered a corona and I went with the mango margarita which was heavenly. It was sweet and strong and it came with a chipotle spiced rim and it had a nice kick to it. I went with the carnitas and entrana tacos and a chicken tostada. The tacos came with a good amount of meat but the tostada could have had more chicken but they were all so delicious! The meat was fresh. I think next time I'm going to try the quesadilla I saw a couple of tables order them and they looked awesome!
I have been to Nixtamal a few times so I now feel it's time for my review. Tortilleria Nixtamal is a small taco restaurant / factory at the end of a nondescript residential block of private homes in Corona, Queens, NY. They have an authentic tortilla making machine and they make thousands of tortillas a day because they supply tortillas to many of NYC's Mexican restaurants. One would never expect to find tortillas and tacos of this quality in a location like this. Parking is difficult in this residential area so be prepared to drive around the block a few times.
I was there with my daughter for dinner at 8:00 on a Friday night and the wait for a table was an acceptable 20 minutes. Once we were seated the fun began. I ordered a beer and my daughter ordered the Horchata. The Horchata was delicious but way to sweet for my liking my daughter loved it. We ordered the homemade guacamole and chips and a steak tostada while we looked at the menu. The guacamole was some of the best we ever had, seasoned just right with plenty of chunks of fresh tomato. The chips are made from their tortillas and are perfectly fried. We ordered a second batch for scooping up the rice and beans we had ordered. The tostada was a delicious steak salad atop a toasted tortilla. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
I ordered a couple of tacos al Pastor and a chorizo taco. My daughter ordered a steak taco, chicken taco and an al Pastor. We ordered some rice and beans to share because I wanted to try them. The rice and beans were OK, I've had better, but my curiosity had been satisfied. Next time I'll just order more tacos instead. Now those tacos, man o' man are they good. The chunks of pork in the al Pastor are seasoned just right and was not over powered by the onion and cilantro. The pineapple chunks just take the al Pastor over the top. An amazing flavor combination. The chorizo was very good and not very spicy. My daughter said her chicken and steak tacos were also very good. She was so blown away by the tacos al Pastor, that she ordered 2 more for desert. I had another chorizo and al Pastor for my desert.
I also need to mention that on a previous visit with my wife we had shared a bowl of their Pozole, a house-made pozole in white pork broth, served w/ lettuce, radish, onion, Mexican oregano & a tostada wow was that good. When the weather gets colder I'll need to try their tortilla soup. I also tried their tamales. The tamales were good but try as I may I'm not a fan of tamales but I'll keep giving them a try.
Tortilleria Nixtamal is worth the trip and the hunt for a parking spot. Time to go on a taco adventure.
Have seen so many reviews and media coverage of Tortilleria Nixtamal that I wanted to make a trip and visit this place. Met with two other Yelper's and just finished brunch here.
Tip #1- This is a very small restaurant. The first entrance- is the take out area. The second entrance is to the restaurant.
Come early to grab a table. The place opens up at 11 AM. Got there 11:25 AM and got any table I desired.
Tip #2- Order a la cart to try the variety of tacos they have available and then reorder more when you found your favorite.
What did I have?
-The Fish Tacos was a tad spicy, but so far my favorite. Breaded chunks of fried fish
-The Barbacoa Lamb Tacos was good too.
-One of the Pork Tacos was a bit too fatty (greasy chunks) to my liking
Horchata was not cold enough and a bit sweet. On a hot day like this load up on water.
Festive decorations and bright decor for tables and chairs. Dia De Los Muertos tiles all over the walls.
Will be back again if I am in the neighborhood again.
By the time we left there were lots of people outside waiting for seats.
Definitely enjoyed the food and experience here. I will definitely be going back! Keep up the good job guys! Oh and great decor
I love New York and all the little gems the great city has to offer. Most people don't consider Queens to have anything as good as Manhattan has to offer but times are changing people and Queens is now a food scene.
I came here years ago before a Mets game and remembered the great inexpensive food. I wanted to show my girlfriend this place for months now so the other weekend before the Mets game we parked nearby and walked through the neighborhood. If you didn't use Yelp of Google Maps, your probably would never had heard about this place. It's in the middle of rows of homes with almost nothing else around. But walking down the block, the bright colors and smell of fresh masa and tortillas are perfuming the air and you know your headed in the right direction.
We each started with a drink. A simple Corona for me and my girlfriend had one of their margaritas. I had a taste and wow it blew me away, not kidding one of the best I'v had in a long time. She is going to know after reading this review, but she turned and was watching TV or something and I stole a few more sips it was that good.
So to the food: They have so many options and if you can't decide on one of their platters or dishes, just pick and choose from the taco and tamale list. I had the chicken taco, the steak, and the chipotle tamale. The tamale was my favorite because its so rare for a restaurant to make their own; it was fresh, steaming, spicy goodness. The salsa's on the side are perfect if the tacos are a little dry for your liking or if you want to kick things up a notch.
The service is great, everyone is so attentive. You can tell the staff actually appreciates their customers and everywhere I look, the staff members were smiling and enjoying their job and proud of the food they serve. My advice is no matter what, try something with one of their tortilla shells. They are made there and chances are when your eating Mexican out, you are eating tortillas made here. No matter what you end up ordering for a meal, make sure you try their handmade and authentic tortillas. Can't wait to come back again and try something new on the menu!
Stopped by here after an afternoon at the Queens Zoo. It's just a ten minute walk away. When we arrived there weren't any seats so we opted to order and eat on the benches outside (there are two available). There's a separate window for take out orders so it was quick and easy to place our order. While the service was fast and the employees nice, I thought the food was underwhelming. Got the chicken quesadilla and fish tacos. The taste for both lacked a kick to them. The chicken wasn't marinated enough and fish lacked the crispiness I'm used to in tacos. They use skate, which I'm not that big of a fan of. In terms of size, it's small. For a full meal you'd have to have at least a few tacos and an app. The size of a quesadilla is probably around 5-6 inches, which is pretty small compared to other places which use a full 8 inch tortilla. For the price they charge, you'd expect a bigger serving size. If I'm around the area (for Queens Zoo or NY Hall of Science) maybe I'd stop by but otherwise wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
