The sushi here is not bad, but pretty ordinary. Like a lot of economy-priced, non-Japanese owned sushi restaurants, Toyo is a big fan of the avocado. I think avocado is ok, but sometimes I just don't like the slick fruit in my sushi. I scoured the menu for 2 non-avocado, non-fried (I don't like tempura in my sushi either) sushi rolls, and was left with the Christmas roll & the yellowtail with jalapeno. The Christmas roll was good, fresh, and featured both red & green roe in addition to tuna & salmon. I was pleased with the hearty slices of jalapeno in the yellowtail roll, which gave it a nice kick.
In addition to the rolls, we also ordered the oyako don (chicken & egg over rice), wasabi shumai, and cold tofu. The rice was alright though the chicken was a little dry and could have been more flavourful. The shumai had an interesting wasabi finish. The tofu was really good but I also think that it's hard to mess this dish up.
Overall, not bad for a regular sushi joint. I will probably order from here again at some point.
