We shop here most weekends. It's big enough to have variety but small enough to function.
Mostly come here for the produce. Specialty items like okra, shishito peppers, squash, heirlooms, eggplant, mint, peaches, plums, and so on. We also like the duck, turkey sausage and baked quiche and breads.
Mostly, that it's fresh and a convenient place to shop.
I recently began working out in the Tribeca area on some weekends and this past weekend I noticed there was a cool green market right near my gym (the Reade Street NYSC if you're curious). I'm very used to larger green markets such as Union Square but this one is much less insane and not crowded. Granted the variety is not quite as insane, but while the focus is on fresh produce, there was a stand for cheese, another for seafood, another with sausages and yet another with fresh duck. I think it's safe to say that you can easily throw together a really nice meal with what was sold here.
The produce was my focus on this day. I picked up a couple avocado squash (something I had never heard of before this day) and some Japanese eggplant. I also purchased some Purslane which looked wonderful. As of this writing I have only managed to cook the eggplant and squash and I have to say they tasted wonderful just with some olive oil, butter, salt and pepper. Very fresh and it was fun to try something new!
I'm definitely going to be back to check out more of what this market has to offer (including the bakery stand that I missed out on)!
