This place was hoppin' on a Saturday late afternoon. I got the salad platter (choice of 5 salads) and the dish was very pleasant… until I encountered a hair in my dish. I guess things like this happen? I did think the pita/bread that they serve with the platter was on the harder side than other Middle Eastern places and I prefer the softer pitas.
If I happened to be in the neighbourhood again and was hungry, I think I'd come back here? … I'm unsure, but its a possibility.
After researching yelp for Middle Eastern places in Brooklyn Heights settled on Tutt Cafe.
When you walk into Tutt Cafe it's a little confusing because it is essentially a Middle Eastern Pizza place. Imagine pizzeria with Middle Eastern spice smells and some Middle Eastern art works on the walls. The pictures say a lot about the atmosphere of the place, not ambiance, but atmosphere. The pictures in the frames are super weathered and look as if they have been through a really bad rain storm. Expect it to be humid and sort of warm.
There's sort of waiter service but not really. The waiter service was just one of the guys behind the counter. Don't expect service to be good.
The service is very slow. For drinks we got water and cold mint tea. The best thing is there is a little tiny cooler filled with ice next to the drinks on the left hand side of the restaurant towards the counter area. That's where they scoop out the ice! It was pretty silly and I had a good laugh.
We ordered falafel as an appetizer, which I would not recommend. Dry, underseasoned and actually pretty small portion for how much you pay.
The sandwich and plates on the other hand are quite a deal with pretty sizeable portions but the food itself is really just average. The plate comes with the meat you chose, a small salad and hummus or baba ghanoush.
Would definitely come back but to try the pizzas people rave about or get another plate.
A very casual middle eastern eatery with outdoor seating and good middle eastern food. And very good home-made pita bread that arrives to the table like a poofy balloon. It's all about this bread, folks. That and the availability of outdoor seats in a very pretty neighborhood block.
Why didn't I discover this place sooner!
It's a cheap Middle Eastern food in Brooklyn Heights. I am a huge fan of the chicken plate, comes with hummus and a salad. The staff are really nice and the food is cheap for the area.
The ambiance of the restaurant is casual and the staff are really friendly. Definitely try this place!
Just came back here after a two-year hiatus of forgetting about this place – how could I! I hyped it up to the friend I brought and was genuinely nervous that it would disappoint…but it didn't! We had the Chicken Pitza again – A MUST order – and I was in the throes of a mouthgasm once again. We also had the assorted salad – Tabbouleh, Babbaganoush, Beet Salad, Hummus and Lentil. Everything was fair, but we were craving more Babbaganoush and Beets when it was all done. Overall, super quick and friendly service and delicious noms that hasn't deteriorated over the years.
Who needs Grimaldi's when you have Tutt Cafe? {Note: Their Storefront says "Tutt Heights"} The Arabs always do it better!
Had the lambajin and chicken pizza, no one liked the lambajin, the tomato sauce kills it but the chicken was good, so was the feta salads and stuffed grape leaves. The meat sandwich wrap was also ok but nothing was mind blowing. I've been to the middle east and i absolutely love manakeesh, but the pitza (manakeesh) here is nothing like that experience. The place is quiet, mostly empty, The guy behind the counter is nice but It's not a memorable experience. It's okay for a bite.
been coming here for years.. shocked I haven't reviewed it before. same great quality baba and hummus, fresh salads, great prices, chill vibe, outdoor seating. perfect place to grab some takeout to enjoy on the promenade or in the park.
3.5 stars. I have mixed feelings about Tutt Cafe. On the one hand, it's a rock-throw from my apartment. And given my patience (or lack-there-of) for cooking, this is a huge plus. The wait staff is also very kind, the service is fast, the prices are right, and oh my god the complimentary Lebanese sfouf cake is So. Ridiculously. Good. Think cornbread… but better.
On the other hand, the falafels I tried at Tutt just weren't that fresh. When I cut through the falafel ball with my fork, the outer shell resisted and was rubbery. The inside was dry. This is a no-no for me.
In all, I think I'll come back for the convenience of it (and for the sfouf cake) but it's not my favorite spot in the neighborhood.
