I absolutely adore this place.
I'm a sucker for red velvet cupcakes, and this place has my favorite in the city. The frosting is light, yet flavorful; the cake is fluffy and moist.
The Brooklyn Blackout Cake is to die for. The perfect cupcake for chocolate lovers, it's several layers of chocolate cake with chocolate pudding inside, topped with chocolate frosting. I thought the chocolate would overwhelm me (although I'm a chocolate lover), but the different types of chocolate within this one cupcake kept the cupcake interesting and desirable.
The yellow cake with chocolate frosting was also a delicious take on a "classic" style cupcake; it reminds you of what your grandma would have made for you when you were little (if your grandma was the type to bake cupcakes). Again, both the frosting and cake parts were worthwhile – both separately and together.
The New York cheesecake is also one of my favorite cheesecakes (the only place that has better is Zanze's in San Francisco). It's light, smooth, moist, and not overly sweet with a delicious crust that doesn't overpower the flavor of the cheesecake itself.
The lines here can be quite long – service is very friendly but slow. It's sweet that they chat it up with each customer, but it can be a bit frustrating when the line is out the door. Still, the cupcakes and cheesecake are all worth the wait.
Great bakery that actually opens LATE! Hard to find a bakery that stays open pass 6-7 pm.
Small little bake shop with a ton of cupcakes, cakes, and pies to pick from.
Mini Cupcakes – $1.75 each – I tried the Red Velvet, Carrot, and Peanut Butter Fudge Swirl. Very moist cakes. Each cupcake was done just right. Love that they have minis so you can try a bunch.
Cherry Cheesecake, slice – $5 – Very creamy cheesecake with a great crust. Junior's was a little better though.
Boo me! I forgot to take pictures of the desserts before we ate everything!
I will definitely be back for their New York Cheesecake that they are so famous for, but as it was the middle of the afternoon my stomach wasn't completely prepared for something that heavy. I ended up sharing a Red Velvet ($3) and Brooklyn Blackout ($4) with my sister. Milk was also $2 for a small cup.
I give the Brooklyn Blackout 5/5. I call this cupcake 'chocolate perfection'. Usually when there's this much chocolate in a cupcake it can easily go horribly sweet and horribly wrong. That was definitely not the case with the Brooklyn Blackout. This cupcake was a perfect blend of sweetness that was comfortable to the palate, yet chocolate-y enough to satisfy any cocoa connoisseur.
I think the Red Velvet deserves a 6/5! I absolutely love the cream cheese frosting. I'm not sure if I'm pinpointing the flavor right, but I seem to taste a subtle hint of sourness in the cream cheese which I think pairs perfectly with the rich flavor of the cupcake – a truly divine combination. I want to say that I could actually taste the flavor of eggs in their cupcake (if that even makes any sense), which I think is what plays a huge part in bringing out its tastiness. While the cupcake itself is delicious, I do believe this cupcake only tastes as good as it does when eaten together with the cream cheese frosting. So yeah, I highly recommend that each bite has both frosting and cupcake!
I also feel like it's the first time I've enjoyed a cupcake that wasn't from an Asian bakery. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone!
I love plain cheesecake so naturally, I loved this spot! You should only come here if you love cheesecake!!
We came here after spending the entire day at the MET. It's this really cute tiny cafe that sells famous cheesecake and other desserts. For 3 girls, we shared 1 plain cheesecake and it was more than enough. We also go to try the mini cupcakes and they are not really worth it. Just get the cheesecake! It's delicious because its super light and not heavy at all. Get some iced tea and you have a yummy snack! Next time, I'd love to try their cakes since everyone raves about those too.
I'd come back, but only if I'm in the area. It's kind of far from lower manhattan so I don't think I'll come all the way just for cheesecake
Would I recommend it? Yes!
What a cute little shop! The staff is friendly and the line moves quickly. I got an iced latte, chocolate crackle cookie and a mini peanut butter fudge cupcake. Everything was so good and flavorful and didn't leave me with a heavy feeling afterwards. They have tons of cakes and cupcake flavors so it was really hard to choose! I'll definitely be back here to try more. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order!
Going to be transparent and say that I haven't actually tried their baked goods – will update this review when I do so.
I came with a friend who works as a teacher on the UES and she says that her booji students always bring in cupcakes from this place when it's someone's birthday, so I was expecting extravagance, pretentiousness, and skyrocket prices.
I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong! The inside looks like a cute real-life version of a Disney fairy-tale. Though the shop is quite small (with seating for about 8), they churn out beautiful edibles at a quick rate, and their decor and style is well-noted. If I had been in the mood for something sweet, I definitely would have gone for something here though.
The prices weren't as exorbitant as I would have expected – $4 for a cupcake, and $15 for a small cake. These are reasonable considering the location and when price-matched against the over-rated, and overly dry Georgetown Cupcakes (Crumbs will always have a special place in my heart though :/).
P.S. Phone addicts may be saddened to hear that phones are banned in this shop, so keep your selfies at bay!
Came here to specifically try the Brooklyn Blackout Cupcake at my friend's recommendation. The place is super tiny but very cute. I like the rustic country decor. Unfortunately, at the time we went was near closing, so they were out of a lot of things, including the blackout cupcake.
We got one of the small blackout cakes. It was very good, chocolately and dense, but being refridgerated, it was a little too thick and sugary. It did taste a lot better the next day, after I had let it sit out and get to room temperature.
Also did try the cupcake version eventually, which is definitely the better of the two.
Without a doubt, one of the best cupcakes in NYC. I would say THE best, but I don't want to exaggerate too much. Seriously, much to the chagrin of your wallet and your waistline, one taste of these cupcakes will have you coming back for life. Decadent, rich, not too sweet, and perfectly textured does not even begin to describe the many reasons why these cupcakes are unjustly more tasty than the other cupcakes you'd find around the city.
Brooklyn Blackout is not for the faint of heart. If you love chocolate, you will meet your match in this cupcake.
