This was our first time here, and it was on a Saturday night about 6:30 p.m. the restaurant was able to handle the group of diners very well, and service was attentive, without being intrusive. The food was absolutely delicious!
My shrimp tempura over rice was nicely done, and the portion size was more than adequate. My wife's vegetables and tofu stir fry was very good, although it could have been made with a bit less sauce. My daughter's 2 Specialty rolls wonderful, although she confessed that the only downside was that she wasn't able to eat more of them.
My Sushi appetizer was 4 pieces including tuna salmon and white fish and it was very good. The small salad that was provided with the meal was adequate, and the dressing was fresh and delicious.
Frankly, I can't wait to go back!
We tried this place for lunch today, bento boxes. I had the shrimp tempura (very good) my friend had the chicken teriyaki (also good). Miso soup was OK, nothing special, same for the house salad. The shrimp dumplings were excellent as were the California rolls. So we enjoyed the meal and got away at about $12 per person which is good price/value. Service was OK and quite friendly. We were in one of several standard booths; a bit dimly lit for a business lunch. There were a couple of tamani rooms as you walk in – might be nice to try next time. Sushi bar back on the right. The hibachi tables must be way in the back.
Terrible. The food was eh and the service was the WORST. It just ruined the whole experience. You shouldn't have to get up and find the waiter and repeatedly ask for things. And then be met with constant contempt.
1. My boyfriend asked for steamed rice. They never made it or brought it until repeatedly asked. Like, seriously, about 5 times.
2. Never refilled drinks until hunted down and asked repeatedly.
3. They put teriyaki on the chicken without asking. My boyfriend hates teriyaki and sent it back. They made a huge fuss about it and left and didn't bring him fresh chicken until asked repeatedly.
4. After all this, I got up to go find the manager. I found a couple employees just sitting on their asses behind the sushi bar. They got the waitress for me, not the manager, and she basically shrugged at my requests.
Really? Is this the kind of service a restaurant that costs above $20/head should have? I left a small tip because I just can't do that to a person, but it was about half of what I would have left if the service had been good.
Also, the food is nothing to write home about. Average sushi and below average hibachi. Spend your money and time elsewhere.
Umi is a new sushi and hibachi house in a suburban Wayne strip mall. The restaurant has new, beautiful decor offering several dining options, including granite countered hibachi grills, a sushi bar, and several intimate cherry wood booths. While the food is already up to par, the service is a bit haphazard. Do not be surprised if your table is visited by several waiters and waitresses, occasionally causing conflicting results.
When it comes to the food, this place is pretty darn great. The Edanname is lightly salted, and the beans have a strong fragrant undertone, making them more flavorful than most. The Miso Soup is fine, but nothing special. The House Salad contains a savory ginger miso dressing. The Eel and Avocado Maki is one of the best I have ever had, based on the freshness of the fish and the tangy BBQ sauce. The Fashion Roll (which includes shrimp, salmon, tuna, avocado, cucumber, tempura crumbs, and a topping of salmon roe) is a jumble of cooked and raw fish, making it an interesting mix. The Smoked Salmon Maki is also delicious, as it contains perfectly seasoned salmon that is not overshadowed by a smoked flavor.
I recommend trying Umi for its fresh seafood; however, in terms of dining there, you may want to give them a few more weeks to get their act together.
