Uncle Nick’s Greek Cuisine
“This is a hidden gem on 9th Ave. My favorites are the big beans appetizer, chicken kebobs and their wine list.”
“The chicken is a huge portion, and we had enough to take home for another meal.”
“I've had the chicken souvlaki sandwich, the stuffed grape leaves and the scordalia (potato and garlic dip) on different occasions, and it's always been very good.”

Mediterranean is my favorite type of cuisine , and Uncle Nick's is one of my "go to" restaurants in the city. I've come here countless times with friends. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and the food is consistently yummy. I especially love their dips and their Greek salad. The portions are very generous and I always leave feeling satisfied.
Solid place in Hell's Kitchen.
The food won't blow you away, but it's definitely a step above the food you get at a Greek diner. Started with a Mythos (which I drank like water when I was in Athens a couple of times) and a Greek salad. Salad was fine but the stuffed grape leaves were standouts. Yum!
For dinner, the gyro platter. Decently priced, the meat was good, rice was just okay, potatoes were oddly greasy.
Brisk, efficient service. No complaints here. Definitely a reasonable choice for dining in HK.
I was in NYC for the weekend to meet up some friends and somewhat for my birthday celebration. My boyfriend and I needed to meet up with one more friend prior our departure back to DC and he picked Uncle Nick's Greek Cuisine.
At first I did not want to come because I was in the mood for something else. We ended up coming here and I am glad we did.
We ordered the Potato and Garlic Dip as an appetizer… so delicious. It reminded me of garlic mash potatoes. It came with pita bread and yes, we ate it all.
I ordered the BIFTEKI. That was sooooooooooooooo yummy I ate the whole thing. It comes with this lemon-y grilled potato side. Perfect combination. I have been craving Greek food ever since.
Definitely one of our new "go to" restaurants when we are in town again. NEW FAVE!!!
Service was very good. Took a few mins to be welcomes since it was a WIERD hour but ultimately service was on point and everyone was friendly.
Got a Mythos beer. Super fresh and Delish
Order Chix with pita and salad- very good $12. Not overly big. Finished the whole thing but then again it was lunch. Chix tasted good
Another chix dish was ordered also good
Desserts were VERY GOOD. The phyllo stuffed with custard was the best and HUGE. Yum. $6
If I'm in the area I'd prob go back for some apps and dessert
Delicious food, decent service. Had the chicken kebab and the chicken was so moist and tender and the rice was really good, too. My friend had a lamb dish which was really tasty.
Service was a little slow, but I will definitely be back. It's great for a family place. Not so much a date place as it's bright and there were quite a few kids. We were going to a show right around the corner so it was perfect for us.
Prices are a bit high, but hey it's NY, and you get what you pay for.
Uncle Nick's is a good place to grab a quick bite before going to the theatre. It's far enough away to avoid the "theatre" crowd but close enough to make it to any play within a 10 minute walk.
As for Uncle Nick's food and the ambiance, they are trying too hard to be authentic but miss by a mile. The food is mediocre, and if you know anything about Meditteranean food you won't be impressed. My father's reaction to our fresh grilled fish was "I think they defrosted this fish and grilled it for us."
I'm giving three stars because my folks and I had come here for my dad's birthday before a show way back when I was in middle school. I remember having simple pork chops which were very good because I didn't know anything about Greek food. I was very very excited to come back here today after all these years for dinner with my mom and aunt since we were getting a city bus to the 42nd Street Bus Terminal to go home anyways. The reason Uncle Nick's is not getting just one more star is because today was disappointing to say the least on the whole. To begin with, there are entirely too many choices on the menu. If not for other Greek specialties, you'd think this was a seafood restaurant as the specials menu is dominated by just that. I know Greek cuisine is very seafood-based, but this is one of those instances where less would have been more. It was quite frustrating trying to decide on a dish. It is also very expensive. Too expensive for what you're getting. My dish of grilled calamari with cooked tomatoes, zucchini, and potatoes was pretty good, my mom and aunt's spinach pie was simply not worth the pretty demanding price that it was. It was not crispy like it should be and according to them, it tasted like it had been made much earlier that day and simply reheated. So much for "fresh". However, the appetizer of dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) was quite good and came out very quickly which brings me to my next point. Service. Thumbs down. A server who was very solicitous of as soon as we were seated, but disappeared and never came back to check on us after our food was served by a totally different server. Flagging down someone (even a busboy) to get a refill on water was difficult. No one was paying attention, staff just walking right by our table. Complete obliviousness. We didn't even bother ordering dessert and made a point of telling the busboy cleaning up our table after we'd finished that we might have ordered something had service been quicker and more attentive. Oh well. I may come back with friends, but I know that I count on my mom never coming back. You don't get to charge high prices and then deliver less-than-par food combined with out-to-lunch table service. It just don't work like that.
On the recommendation of a friend from Greece, I came here with a group of about 8 co-workers, and we were seated immediately at a table in the back.
We got a whole lot of appetizers to share:
Four combo dip – served with lots of hot, fresh pitas. I really enjoyed the fish roe dip, Tzatziki, and eggplant were all really nice, but I wasn't a fan of the potato dip. The fish roe dip is not overly fish at all.
Flaming cheese – this is more for the show of setting cheese on fire than the actual dish. It was good, but basically a glorified mozzarella stick.
Fried smelts – interesting dish. Nice size fried fish and a good portion. As with any small whole fish, there is a little bit of fish funk, but in a good way. You have to enjoy assertive favors to like this one, which I did.
Grilled octopus – pretty excellent. Great char on the octopus and still tender.
Fried calamari – typical fried calamari. Enjoyable, but no different than you find elsewhere.
Meat combo (sausage, sweet breads, meatballs) – mixed bag of a mixed grill plate. The sausage was pretty good, but the meatballs were spiced in a way that was not for me. The sweet breads were served in a lemon and wine sauce. They were cooked well, but I just prefer the more typical preparation of sweet breads lightly dusted and fried crisp, so if that is what you are expecting you will be disappointed. That being said, they were still enjoyable.
For my main I had the grilled lamb kabob, and I really was not impressed. The meat was though and overcooked.
Overall, we had a ton of food for the table and with lots of wine and beer, the total including tip came to $55 a person, so this place is a good value.
So the final verdict: it's a great place for a group to share a lot of mostly good appetizers, but the mains were lacking.
