A weeks ago I had the pleasure of finally trying Uncle Sam's Burgers after having had them on my Yelp bookmark list for quite some time. I came with some foodie friends and we were determined to order a variety of things so we could all try everything. With prices being pretty reasonable, this is not a difficult feat should you want to come here with a group of friends and do the same.
Beverage-wise they have some interesting options here. Some cool soda options, juices, iced teas and smoothie like shakes. I'm not really a soda fan at all, but I can't pass up on a good old school fountain vanilla cream soda. I got it and it was great! Two thumbs up here!
I'm going to focus on what I ate because although everything looked amazing, there are certain things I don't like and so steered clear from *throws a side glance at anything kimchi-related*. For myself I ordered their classic-style Bacon Cheeseburger. This burger featured Chinese-style bbw bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, bread & butter pickles and their house sauce. I asked for pickles on the side so someone else could chow down on them and I went to work on the rest.
This was a really fantastic burger you guys!!! The meat was delicious, the bacon had really interesting flavor – in the best of ways and the house sauce was a perfect way to bring everything together. So much yum here!
Their limited-edition burger (I have no idea if it's still available) was topped with lox-style salmon and was really delicious. I think it was drizzled with some sesame oil sauce – it was magical. I also really want to come back sometime soon for their "Which Came First?" chicken sandwich.
As a side we all shared their tater tots and french fries — multiple orders – all loaded with their sichuan chili, pepper jack cheese, scallions and sriracha mayo. MAN. These fries and tots were perfection! If you come here and get potatoes, regardless of which style you get – definitely go for the "Load your sides" option – you won't regret it!
Overall I really liked this place. Service was great, all of our food was prepped thoughtfully and quickly. I'm definitely looking forward to my next time here!
I wasn't wowed by the Uncle Sam's Signature burger but I liked the audacity of this east-meets-west effort.
Although I opted for the Boylan's fountain they have a good variety of beverages, including Thai iced tea and several shakes.
The toppings overall, including mushrooms and the "oyster glaze," were too sweet and the meat itself didn't stand up to them. It seemed medium rare and would have worked better on the well done side.
I got the loaded fries with a Sichuan chili and the captivating sriracha mayo. While the burger was small, there was a quite a generous pour on the side items.
My other side was an example of a simple but effective trick: beyond the cheese-laden hybrids targeting rambunctious youngsters, you can get healthy fare here. A rice bowl with some vegetables is available, as are kale salad ($6.50) and chopped salad ($6.95.) For this inaugural visit, I was very pleased to see side versions of these salads for $2.95. Not only could I eat and review more items at a low cost, but I could pile up crazy calorie numbers but still make a minor gesture toward healthiness.
Shoutouts to their drink selection. Some teas (though I didn't try so they might be quite sweet) and they have Boylan's on tap. Boylan's Root Beer/Cream Soda is much better than your usual selection.
Got their big deal which consisted of their cha siu bacon burger, some fries with sriracha mayo, and a drink.
The bacon burger was OK. Pretty juicy though a bit small. I didn't really detect a cha siu flavor, maybe they need 5 spice or some specific sauce/topping for the burger? I wouldn't pay 7/8 bucks for it solely, a bit ridiculous.
The fries were oily but good. Nicely crunchy/crispy. They almost reminded me of plantain chips more due to their crunchiness. The siracha mayo was OK. I wouldn't exactly call it Siracha but there was a good amount of spice.
People were nice, especially for this type of joint.
The place is clean and I might go back for a shake or to try a chicken sandwich, especially if they have a special with it. It's a bit much without it if I want a drink.
3.3, mostly for the deal.
A Chinese entrepreneur designing a restaurant that serves American-style food trying to absorb the Chinese-American and Korean-American influences of the neighborhood.
Uncle Sam's Burgers is more meta than self-indulgence alt-comedy set. Rather amazingly there's some halfway decent fare inside the concept.
I went for two meals inside a week, as I take Russian lessons across from the building. The layout is big, open and clearly inspired by other fast-casual restaurants like Shake Shack and Smash Burger. This wouldn't be so noticeable in Beijing, but here in New York it means there's a blandness to the surroundings that I'm not sure is entirely intended.
Kimchi is a great addition to the burger, if a bit of easy shorthand for Korean food. I'm not sure that my sandwich needed so much pickled radish. There's a reason why this is usually served on the side in Korean cooking. My Peking style chicken sandwich, which I had on another visit, was a more satifisying melange, with the thick hoisin sauce and cucumber adding crunch and texture to a nicely fried patty.
The fries aren't something to write home about and I hate that god damn Boylan soda that seems to be popping up more and more as places try to be "upscale" casual, but overall nowhere the trainwreck this place would seem to be on paper.
I've been here twice and the food is great. The service is decent and the atmosphere is really cool. The menu features an Asian cuisine take on the regular burger which I think is awesome.
What brought me in today was an email about the brand new cheeseburger potsticker. Two of my favorite foods combined in one sounds amazing. Unfortunately, they were out before 2 PM. The cashier had no idea when they were going to get them back, so hopefully I can try them soon.
I recommend the onion rings, they are so so so good.
I recently came back for another visit and I absolutely loved it!
I got a chance to try its Chicken Sandwich (special) because I have seen its ads while walking by it numerous times. When I first got my plate, I was disappointed because the portion looked small and it appeared to be a half sandwich to me.
However, as I took some bites, I realized that there was actually a substantial amount of food, which was great. That's always the best eat-out experience, where I think the portion would be small but I actually got completely stuffed. The sandwich was not too dry which was good. But it lacked a bit of kick (maybe add more salt & pepper)?
I also got a chance to chat with its GM Cheryl and PR Director Leigh, they are both so nice. They are planning for a second location in Chelsea (though smaller). It always makes me happy that a business cares much about what customers have to say on Yelp. So definitely 5 stars just for that.
I think if you work in the area, you should definitely given them a try. They also have party space upstairs, should you need it for a gathering or company holiday party.
If you are an international tourist, I understand the temptation to try any of the chain restaurants around here (McD, Panera Bread, Starbucks, DD, Potbelly, etc). However, if NYC isn't your only stop, save the chain restaurants for the other cities.
If you are a domestic tourist, are you seriously going to eat at McD?
Many times I have rushed to an appointment in the area and need to grab a quick bite to eat and stop in at Uncle Sam's. There is an Asian feel to the menu and they serve tater tots! Burgers are on the small side but tasty.
innovative to have a asian fusion burger place
I tried the cha siu burger and it was good, price was decent
but what really made me only give this place a 3star is the size of these burgers and the wait. These things are like the size of a jr cheese burger… and I only ordered a burger, it took over 15 minutes for me to get it for take out
I understand this might be a new place so they're still getting it together… but get it together dammit..
tl;dr
food is good. can improve
