I'm in love with this place. It's like San Francisco , but 1/2 the price. The selection of vegetables is fantastic and seasonal. I saw fiddleheads, fava beans (which came home with me) and 4 summer squashes. The meat section is small, but looks fresh. My only complaint is the limp coffee. Humph.
We opened our Union Market-purchased cod, and the whole kitchen flooded with stink. Not even cooking could save it. Dinner reeked of vajayjay. Was shopping here 1-2x a week (it's very close by), and bleeding money, but (writing as someone who's worked in a fish market before) this last bit of health-and-safety neglect drove me over the edge.
Union Market is waaaaaay too expensive not to have proper freshness checks (or offer a customer loyalty card, ahem). Moreover, it's not a place for people who actually cook, or plan! It's best for PMS novelty items (like the $11 box of marshmallows I immediately put back), cheap/oily coffee beans, and rotisserie chicken. Beware competing in a Hunger Games through their narrow, precariously-arranged aisles. It's also weirdly spotty in terms of real-life-kitchen stocking (ex: bulk and frozen staples run out; pricey stocks and no pre-made mirepoix; no clean/raw food staples; nasty prepared veggies). Nearby bodegas like The Bad Wife have a wider selection of oils, spices, and soups.
I decided that I hate this place.
And there's just no effort to make it better. Look at the reviews. It's a 2 star market. I don't know why I continue to do this to myself.
I get home and I'm missing items in my bag. I don't get it. Is it THAT hard to put my items in a bag?
The reviews on here are unanimous in the horrid check out experience. It's just. Not. That. Hard. Apparently. It. Is. Oh. Sorry. Wait. No. It's. Not.
If you're going to charge absurd prices for food the service has to be there. I shouldn't get home and be missing items.
Also, the shopping baskets are filthy. I'd love to see what kind of bacteria are crawling all over the baskets we put our raw produce in. I'm encouraging a news reporter to visit and check that out. Place is gross, service is lacking, prices are silly expensive. DO NOT GO HERE – I don't care how convenient it is.
I only buy certain things here. This is not because they don't have everything, but I simply do not make enough money to go grocery shopping here. The olive bar and cheese selection are fabulous. The produce is beautiful and organic- which a price tag to match. It's a very nice store for buying specialty items, but that's about all I can afford. God bless you if you can, but should food really be this expensive?
What needs to be said? It's a pretty expensive supermarket, but usually worth it for the quality. The cheeses, breads and olive bar are great. The meats – superb. Rush hour is a little crazy with the strollers, but all-in-all a great little shop.
It's expensive
Organic items are few
It's small
In general the sfaff is almost never smiling
BUT
A couple or Three of their deli guys are super nice to me
Their adobo roasted chicken is very good
They have a good dry pasta selection
They have some nice breads
They have very good marinated olives and sundried tomatoes
And also a good serrano ham at the deli
So, I like it. It's walking distance from home, and for some specific items I like to go there
I love a Union Market, it is well organized and top notch products. The price tag also reflects this. I like all the variety they have an often they have great seasonal produce too!
Union Market is the store folks love to hate. Sure, it's expensive, but if I need a specialty cheese item, great bread, some quality dairy products or seafood or meat, I often head here in lieu of other options in the area. My real issue with Union Market is that they VERY often sell stuff that is either out of date or nearly out of date (cheese packaged weeks ago still on the shelf, coffee roasted more than a month ago, meat or fish that look iffy). Still, having spent a considerable part of my New York life in areas where you couldn't even buy a roll or a gallon of milk without wondering, I'm very glad that Union Market exists and is nearby. There have been dozens of times when I've headed here for just an ingredient or two and they've nearly always come through at or about the expected price. I will be a frequent shopper for years to come, BUT I will continue to keep my eagle eye out to avoid the old stuff.
