I came here tonight for an educational dinner. As such, I had an abbreviated menu to choose from, but overall the food and service were great which warrant praise.
The restaurant itself has a great look to it; it's modern, upbeat, and fresh. We were seated in one of the back rooms – it had simple decor with white chairs and tablecloths paired with contemporary-style crystal chandeliers which added an elegant touch.
Our abbreviated menu had 3 to 4 items listed for each course that we had to choose from. For an app I had the crab cake, it was pretty good -not fishy and had large chunks of crab. It came paired with a pickled salad which complemented it well. We had two salads to choose from so I went with the garden salad dressed with a red wine vinaigrette; nothing too remarkable about it – good but basic. For my entree, I went with sushi (I'm not a big red meat eater); it consisted of a lobster roll and a shrimp tempura roll (which they called an empress roll). Both were great – the shrimp tempura roll especially. For dessert I had the chocolate cake; it was simple, but super tasty – it's wasn't overly sweet which I appreciated.
Service was good, and overall it's one of the better educational dinners I've been to.
Steakhouse row – only 2 stars? Can't be!
Well kids – it just doesn't deserve anymore than that… And let me tell you why.
We reserve on Open Table a full week in advance. But, when we go to check in, it seems that our reservation is very hard to find. Voila – it mysteriously appears and we are escorted to the only table for 4 in the back (party) room. Arguably the worst table in the restaurant. But, although the restaurant is only 1/2 full we don't complain and sit down.
We are immediately given menus, bar and wine menus and asked for our order. (Don't we get a moment to look through the menus?)
A moment later we are once again asked to order. Our waiter looks like he's out of central casting (beautifully dressed in a formal navy suit and tie) but he hasn't a clue – no sense of timing at all. He interrupts us all evening long.
We order our drinks… But long before they get to our table another beautifully dressed but inept waiter is asking for our dinner orders. I feel that they have a quota. Turn the table over or don't bother coming back to work.
Our table starts with both caesar and iceberg salads and onion soup. The iceberg was a hit and starts my friend's meal off in a positive way. The caesar salad is unremarkable and my soup is nothing at all – inferior to what you would get in any local diner.
Special of the night is prime rib and both my friend and I order it rare. "No, the best we can do is medium rare." We give the ok only to be served a dry, medium cooked piece of prime rib. A filet mignon ordered black and blue comes out overcooked while the roast chicken tastes like it came pre-cooked from Costco. Sides are no better. Dry and tasteless was the order of the day.
I can't lie – the desserts were very good and everyone enjoyed them. But coffee was served without cream and our overbearing waiters were nowhere to be seen.
Our table had only 2 drinks (total) and no really expensive apps and our bill was about $225 a couple.
With Peter Lugers and Mortons within walking distance and Bryant and Cooper down the block, why would I ever choose to return?
Beautiful decor. Mediterranean Salad was at least 2 large beefsteak tomatoes, yummy fresh basil, cucumbers, and feta cheese. Fresh.
I had the aged NY steak medium rare. I did not enjoy it so much. The seasoning was not so tasty (I understand what another reviewer described as a cheesy taste).
The coffee was French pressed. This was delicious. The best part of the meal.
I would have liked a more varied wine list. Had the Hess Cabernet Sauvignon which was good.
The drinks looked interesting, named after various rock songs, but I didn't try any.
I was disappointed with the steak in this steakhouse. The good news is that I've rediscovered French pressed coffee.
The server was attentive and outstanding.
I'd go back to try the specialty drinks.
Since they redid this establishment I had only been here once but it wasnt quite finished. It was midweek and we made a reservation ( wisely because it filled up quickly) . I was blown away by the stark contrast of what it used to be, in a pleasant way, of course. Its stunning.
For starters we shared oysters , salad and had a cocktail. I had a hankering for a skirt steak which was served with mashed and fried onions, sheer perfection. Other mother had the special of the day, a delightful Fish, and my daughter opted for a classic grilled chicken Cesar for keeping on the light side.
Our server, loved him! sweet, funny, made great suggestions and attentive but not overbearing.
We all shared dessert, now I haven't had a banana cream pie since I was like 12, but this was by far the most delicious one I have had. Oddly enough, it was light and airy and I didn't walk away regretting my happy ending…or anything else for that matter. Will most definitely be adding to my hit list of classic favorites.
Union just opened a few blocks away from my office, so a friend and I decided to grab some lunch here last week. Beautiful, modern atmosphere! Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations. For the prices they charge, you would think the seafood plates would be on point. But the grilled octopus was slathered in hummus, which took away from the flavor. The scallops were tasteless and dry. And the lobster mac 'n cheese barely had any lobster in it. Meh, disappointing.
