  1. My girlfriend is a huge sandwich (bread lover). Unfortunately for her, she works in the Financial District area, where food options are limited; we all know midtown is where all the good food is at! Therefore, my foodie girlfriend lives vicariously through me with the must try lunch spots list that she compiled for me.

Untamed Sandwiches is a bit of a walk from my office, so I was a little hesitant to walk 11 blocks for a sandwich as I don't love bread as much as my girlfriend. However, with an urge to walk and with my girlfriend's list not failing me so far, Friday was the perfect day to venture out here.

My girlfriend informed me that the Hot Goldie (brisket, red onion, sweet and sour cabbage, and black pepper aioli) is the sandwich to order here. Sadly, when I got to the counter, the cashier stated that they no longer serve the Hot Goldie and suggested the Frere Jacques (pork wine braised grassfed beef brisket, caramelized onions, gruyere cheese, whole grain mustard, and crispy tobacco onions) instead. Sandwiches are not cheap here! At $14, pre tax, the Frere Jacques came out to be close to $16 for just the sandwich alone.

I was a little worried that the sandwich might not taste as great sitting in the bag as I walked back to the office, but it held up just fine. The brisket was so tender – I actually prefer it over Mighty Quinn's brisket. If you're in the area/work in the area, you have to try Untamed Sandwiches. Not only are the names of the sandwiches unique, they're also open for breakfast! Pricy, but worth the spurge. The Butt will be the next sandwich I'll try!

  2. Visiting NY for work and stumbled upon this amazing sandwich spot. The space is incredibly small, but then again it's NY. I ordered the special and they were pretty quick for how busy they were. The place smells delicious and my sandwich was kind of life altering. Perfectly baked ciabatta with seasoned meat that is second to none. Next time I'm in town I'll be back!

  3. I expected this place to be crazy-busy for lunch on a weekday from the reviews on Yelp, but it was pretty standard, esay line to get through and the sandwiches were prepared quickly. With luck, we were able to snag seats as two other patrons were leaving. I got The Butt which was quite delightful. The sandwich wasn't too big and wasn't too small, although it would have been nice to have some more meat in it. My friend got the Chicken Tinga which she adored. The side of grits were not that spectacular, but I have high standards for girts being a Southern gal and all. It was a bit pricey — $15 for a sandwich and a lemonade (which I could have done without, nothing to write home about, standard lemonade). Good staple lunch place perhaps when you want to treat yourself to a more expensive sandwich. For dessert, grab a cookie from Culture Espresso on 38th and 6th. SO GOOD.

  4. Gluten free sandwiches on bread that is NOT rock hard and NOT 1/3 the size of the regular sandwiches?? Say it ain't SO!

This place is a god send. Get The Butt. Juicy shredded pork with spicy/sweet pepper jelly and broccoli rabe = party for your tastebuds. Literally the best tasting sandwich I've had in ages. The gluten free bread was soft, buttery and oh so tasty. I was honestly in disbelief the entire time I was eating it.

Worth every penny. Go here now!

  5. Ok the atmosphere and the look of the spot is great. A good place to meet a friend for lunch.  Extra large windows in the front for people watching.  The service was friendly and quick no complaints there.

However the main event I wasn't pleased with at all.  I was very disappointed with the sandwich.  Maybe if the price was cheaper this place would be jammed pack but for the price and flavors….nahhh.

I ordered the Raspberry lemonade + "the Butt" which was pork shoulder, broccoli rob(which I should have known I would not like) some type of delicious jelly/jam on ciabatta bread.  I was not impressed, full or satisfied…smh and I had such high hopes.  Honestly the flavors and portion size do not justify that $15 meal…yes small sandwich and small drink $15.

I feel if this place would be great in a better neighbor or a truck would be awesome, because they could lower the prices, maybe.

  6. Cool spot in a touristy area. Surprised noone else was here- maybe some cooler signage feeling less commercial may help.

Got the Nettle Neck, which I was super excited for because I've had lamb neck before and surprisingly loved it, BUT I'd say this was a notch below it.

Still 4 stars for creativity and I will be back if in the area to try one of everything else!

  7. Two words when you come here – Frere Jacques. Seriously, don't even look at the menu and just proceed to the register and order the Frere Jacques on ciabatta. The faster you order, the faster your taste buds will thank you. Not only is the brisket incredibly juicy, the ciabatta bread is fantastic and has the perfect amount of bite and texture. I LOVE bread and this sandwich is easily one of my favorites. At first it'll look like a small portion, but trust me it's filling. My only compliant is that I don't work in the area, which doesn't allow me to be a regular, but my wallet thanks me as this sandwich is pricy at $14 pre tax.

I also had the chance to try one of their chicken sandwiches – compared to the Frere Jacques, I wasn't a fan as the chicken sandwich was soggy and wasn't flavorful like the brisket.

Sandwich lovers, this place is a must!

  8. I love a good sandwich, and these are good sandwiches! Not being from NY, I looked up lunch on Yelp nearby and the place has lots of great reviews and now here is one more! Even though it was busy, they worked through the line quickly. We grabbed our lunch to go and sat outside on a beautiful NY summer day. It's was so good, one of those moments you just eat and forget to think or talk and when you're done you just say damn that was good.
