Nice smallish store, lots of cold beer. Store clerk was friendly and tried to be helpful but didn't really know a lot about beer. asked about some harder to find beers (BCBS) and he had never heard of them. Good beers store, just not a beer mecca. If you are nearby it is worth stopping in. Cider selection was pretty slim and uninspired. Free delivery.
Where Urban Barley's name is subtle in describing their wares, the smaller sign below proclaiming "BEER" is surely meant to clarify. This small shop on 6th Avenue has a fully open storefront leading into a bright space stocked with craft brews, and mainstream ones too. On both sides are a mix of shelves and refrigerators, neatly lined with beers.
Choices are primarily domestic crafts. Among those, the larger breweries around the country predominate, including Flying Dog, Founder's, Ballast, Rogue, Stone, Dogfish Head, Bell, and Lagunitas. Many fewer internationals, but those have a good, selected representation from the usual suspects in Belgium, Germany, Japan (Hitachino), England, and Canada (Unibroue). They also have Einstok from Iceland, which has turned up often in NYC in the past year.
Most of the domestic beers are sold in four or six pack individual bottled format. Large format bottles are more limited in selection. Not a bar/shop, so no growlers. Prices are reasonable for the area.
NYC has come a long way when there are stores specializing in beer, yet their range of goods can be described as just decent. No rare beers here, mostly the latest from the big names in domestic craft beers. But it's proof of the great state of craft brewery when there's plenty of those for places like Urban Barley to stock, making it an great stop to pick up a beer for just about anyone.
