Urban Burger
“The only problem I had which is minor is that the fried pickles were a bit pricey for the amount we got.”
“The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I'm spiteful that the owner got rid of the Italian Pantry :(”
“I recommend the Speedy Gonzalez (chorizo infused burger topped with pulled pork) but your cardiologist might disagree.”

I was scouting different restaurants in Cranford's quaint downtown area, and fortunately stumbled upon Urban Burger (and a parking spot a mere 20 feet away). Their menu is on the right side when you walk in, but you could also check their website for the burgers and salads they offer. The interior is a bit small, but does have about five tables that could each seat 4 people and a handful of two-seat tables.
Wicked Blue burger ($9.95): The Wicked Blue towers over all of UB's other burger offerings–literally! Between two warm buns is a seasoned beef patty doused with Sri Racha and blue cheese dressing, four large crunchy onion rings stacked atop one another, and sticks of celery on the bottom. I found the burger to be seasoned well and grilled nicely, while the Sri Racha/blue cheese combination actually blends well with the perfectly friend onion rings. All burgers come with a generous serving of crispy fries (or a salad); I opted for the latter.
It Ain't Easy Being Cheesy burger ($10.25): Between TWO grilled cheese sandwiches is a juicy seasoned beef patty smothered in two types of cheese (American and cheddar) and Alfredo sauce with your choice of fries or a salad as your side. The burgers at UB will definitely fill you up–this one is no exception. Even with all that rich, ooey gooey cheese in your burger, you could still taste the tender beef patty. You might as well go with a side of fries as your side. Let's be honest–a salad and this burger? Yeah, I don't think so.
Krabby Patty ($10.95): Oh, Mr. Kraaaaabs! If you're not feeling the beef, you could go with UB's Krabby Patty featuring a crispy crab patty topped with avocado, pico de gallo, chipotle sour cream, lettuce, and your choice of either a salad or fries. I didn't taste it, but it was said to be a tad bit underseasoned; there's a salt shaker on the table, so dash or two should help. Like the beef burgers, the Krabby Patty is also quite large and is served on a metal tray with your side.
While the burgers can get a little messy, I cannot imagine myself eating one with a fork and knife (maybe a knife to slice it). Just have some napkins ready and save the utensils for the salad–you'll be fine. Cranford has plenty of great places to eat, but I do think Urban Burger's creative offerings are worth a shot if you happen to be in the area.
A girlfriend and I went to Urban Burger when we both worked from home on a Friday and wanted a lunch out. We arrived around 12:15 and only 4 other people came in over the course of our hour there. Great if you're looking for quick seating and service (though you order/ pay at the counter), but maybe not a great indication of long term success for the business. Weekends seem busier.
Though it's a burger place, they offer other options which we both tried. I had the Ty Cobb salad which was huge, with plentiful toppings, and just what I wanted (sub spinach for the romaine). Rows of chopped tomato, sliced avocado, egg salad, diced apple, blue cheese, and bacon topped with frazzled onions (tons of them – a great way to turn your healthful meal a little junkylicious). I opted out of the berry vinaigrette and really didn't miss it.
My partner in crime had the fig and Brie grilled cheese with side salad. She loved every bite. The portion certainly wasn't dainty, but it wasn't a belly buster. More of a classic grilled cheese portion.
As mentioned, order and pay at the counter up front. Get a number for your table, and food will be brought to you. Leave behind dishes for staff to clean. Tables have picnic baskets of utensils, napkins and condiments. Casual, but not themed.
WOW.
This place is a GREAT burger joint. Filling and really tasty with a lot of unique offerings on their menu, Urban Burger is a tough spot to beat for a solid burger and gluttonous meal.
Came here for pickup last night with two friends. We ordered over the phone, which went smoothly. +1 because some places are a nightmare with this. We went to pick it up, and it was ready and waiting for us. From a service standpoint, this place does a good job for sure.
The food itself was also great. I got the "Cow in an Onion Patch," and it was MONSTROUS. Huge, beef done well, and stuffed with great cheese, sauce, and string fries. Really a filling meal, so this isn't for the feint of heart for sure.
The fries were steak fries and seasoned very well – some of them were a bit cold, which was a bummer. As a whole, they tasted great though. They give you PLENTY of ketchup with your meal in small cups, which is HUGE for big ketchup fans like myself.
Would definitely recommend this spot to anyone who's in the area and wants a great burger experience. Well done U.B.
This is just for their brunch, not the burgers. Came here with the family (husband, toddler and baby) right when they opened at 9:30 on a Sunday morning. We actually beat the chef there so we had to wait awhile to be served. Luckily the toddler was patient but I didn't like that you have to pay ahead of time since there was a good chance we would have had to leave before the food came out if my daughter threw a fit. Overall we were there for an hour which is sort of crazy for brunch.
However, despite the wait, the food was awesome. Toddler got the waffles which she enjoyed, husband got the Cannoli Cream French Toast and I got the Blueberry Granola Pancakes. Each order came with sausage or bacon. We loved that the bacon was extra crispy, plus it balanced the sweetness of the french toast and pancakes well. I would definitely come back, maybe just a bit later when I can be sure that the kitchen is up and running. It's nice to have a delicious brunch option right in town.
As usual this place never disappoints. We have been coming here since they opened . Every time we come by we try something different and today we were able to try brunch. Now there brunch is not your average portion size . The pancakes are pretty big and served with bacon or sausage. The apple bread French toast was amazing . My daughter loved her cookie dough pancakes she said they were the best. My other daughter had the speedy Gonzales and won't pass up a burger with pulled pork on it . I ordered the continental today and it's breakfast at its best with waffle, burger, egg, cheese and pork roll . Now that's breakfast in one bite. The truffle Mac n cheese is a must try and I order it every time we come. Now if you aren't in the mood for a burger try the Mac Daddy cheese pasta, ground beef, mushrooms and onions . Delicious and definitely a must try
Fresh burgers! What?!! Rarely do I find vegetarian patties that are freshly made in house. The burger was huge and it took a little while for it to come out, but soo yummy! It got messy as it was very warm, but hey, are not-messy burgers any fun anyway?! About $11 for a burger with fries, but I'd say its definitely worth it for a filling and delicious meal!
The area is super hipster and cute for a date or a girls night out for dinner. The restaurant itself is pretty cute for a burger joint – love the chandeliers in the window! They have outdoor seating as well 🙂
We found ourselves wandering around downtown Cranford before a meeting looking for a place to have a late lunch. We stumbled upon Urban Burger.
There is no off-street parking, but the meters are plentiful and cheap at 75 cents for 90 minutes.
The menu has some interesting combinations, but have no fear – the build your own burger will get you quickly back into your comfort zone.
We chose the onion rings as an appetizer and they quickly came out. They looked amazing, but the batter was surprisingly flavorless. The dipping sauce was blue cheese which did not do much to add kick to the ring – a remoulade or spicy sauce might have been a better choice.
For my entree I chose a pattys melt, which was a nice choice. The only thing unusual was that the meat was not a patty, but actually loose, although the flavors was good.
The service is fast casual style where you order at a register, go sit down and they bring the food to you.
Urban Burger is worth a shot if you are in downtown Cranford.
Nice and somewhat classy place (chandeliers in a burger joint?!)
They have a nice variety of burgers– I was seriously overwhelmed by how many options they have. If none of that sounds good, you can make your own. They had me at wheat buns and avocado, holy moly it was so good!
Ultimately, I wanted to try something different so I went for their calabrese option– beef patty with homemade marinara sauce aka "red gravy". It was very savory.
There's plenty of street parking and it's located in a nice neighborhood in Cranford. Staff is nice too and willing to help you with your burger needs 🙂
