It's the other Peruvian restaurant next to Pio Pio you should be aware of. I have visited this restaurant a few times to get food to go but the other night was my first sit down meal and I was really impressed. To be perfectly honest, it took me a long time to even visit the restaurant since I didn't know what it was. I just remember passing this place when I was a little kid, seeing a little Incan statue out front, and had no idea what kind of food this place offered. The decor of the restaurant is pretty cool, it's also lit in a way that would be ideal for a date night or a nice night out. The portions are very generous and enough to have seconds the next day. Ask for the table side hot sauce, it packs a one, two punch with a baby hit up front and then a second hit a little after, I liked the hot sauce on everything.
The food:
Entrana Saltado- Sliced tender skirt steak stir-fried with onions and tomato served on a bed of french fries and white rice. This was excellent, the rice was perfectly cooked and the skirt steak was so nice and tender. The fries were awesome with an onion and tomato like gravy. This is a must order. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Tallarines Verdes con Milanesa de Pollo- Breaded chicken breast with pasta mixed in a basil, spinach and fresh cheese sauce. The pesto pasta fried chicken cutlet is very unique, pasta is cooked more than how I would like but the cutlet was so perfectly fried. The cutlet had so much flavor and was nicely crispy without being oily.
Anticuchos- Two grilled skewers of veal heart with Peruvian corn and potato. I thought the anticuchos were great, they were cooked perfectly. They were very lean and clean tasting, if that makes sense. When you eat them, they don't give you that crazy thought that you are eating heart. The texture and the meatiness of them were exceptional.
Pescado Sudado- Steamed white fish fillet with onions, tomato and seafood broth. This was kinda the quintessential fisherman's stew. There were four big chunks of fish with a very warming and pronounced seafood broth. I wouldn't say this was the most exciting dish but it would definitely hit the spot in the colder months.
Seco de Carne Combinado- Beef stew in a Cilantro sauce served with beans. The beef stew was a safe dish and not really exciting. It was pretty standard but the rice and beans were excellent. The beef was kinda just boiled beef, the hot sauce did add a lot of flavor, though. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Chicha Morada- Made from purple corn, pineapple, and lime. This was very interesting and refreshing. It kinda had a virgin sangria feel to it but with cinnamon.
I've been here twice and the service is super slow but it's cute and the food is pretty great. We got the fried plantains as appetizers and those were crispy and yummy. I got a kind of seafood paella dish which was delicious. Another entree was the roasted chicken which was also great. And the last dish was a beans/rice dish with fish and that was pretty good. The servings are huge and we had lots of leftovers to take home.
Portions are huge and the anticuchos are enormous! Ceviche is good, though a bit heavy on the acid. The menu is vast and I'd love to come back to try more, like the Tacu Tacu. Service is a bit pokey in that loving way that Latino restaurants often are, but I wasn't bothered.
For 3 people who weren't terribly hungry, we shared the Piqueo del Mar and the Parillada Criolla. It was definitely more than enough food, though we polished it off anyway cause it was so good. They also have interesting fruit in their ice cream selection for dessert, and according to the people who liked it, chicha morada was also very good.
If you don't live in the hood like I do, it's still worth the schlep from wherever you are to check this great Peruvian place out.
Note: I came here hoping to order a Pisco Sour, but they are beer and wine only, sadly.
TODO:
Yelp won't let me put this restaurant on a list unless I write a review (Yelp, please change this policy!)
Therefore, this is a stub review for the purpose of populating my list. I'll write the review later.
However, whatever rating I give the restaurant with this stub review is the rating I'd give the restaurant with a real review.
I enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The service was very attentive and friendly.
I ordered the grilled salmon and I must say it was cooked to perfection. I complimented my order with the sangria and it was a great combination.
I ended my work day and had a great dinner and wine to unwind and I was definitely pleased.
I like the atmosphere here. The waiters were very nice. I have a dish that contained all the meats in the world. It was great. The intestine part of it was not so good but loved the skirt steak. The cerviche was great. This place use to be BYOB but not anymore.
I am so happy that this place has not changed we came here in a rainy day and promptly sat and ordered the waitress was so sweet.
Word of caution though they don't take Visa cards only MasterCard and American Express!
Here's what we got:
Pollo Saltado: very good and flavorful with good proportions and is amazing with the hot sauce!
Tallarines verdes con pollo empanizado: This was amazing again some of the best Tallarines you'll find in NYC probably the closest to Peruvian except it's a bit more watery.
Papa ala huancaina: Solid and rivals the best papa aka huancaina in Peru. If you don't order this your a fool.
Cafe con leche: Delicious and reminds me so much of eating breakfast with my father and sipping on this good stuff.
Chicha morada: This Chicha was very good not overly sweet like I have found at other places it's perfectly sweet and acidic with great clove and cinnamon flavor and perfectly cut fruit.
Alfajor : Another banger this place doesn't quit!! Usually alfajores are either corn or flour this variation was flour and it was amazing not dry but perfectly portioned with just enough dulce de leche.
Can not wait to come back here and try more again and again and … Again !!!
This place gets a lot of praise but I was not impressed. The servers are rude, it's essentially cash only (no visa), and they screwed up my carry out order. They didn't provide the sweet plantains I ordered and paid for and with the lomo saltado they didn't cook the fries with the stir fried steak onions and tomatoes and instead provided a miserable side order of soggy cold fries. The soy sauce base was nice and the steak was reasonably tender but the portion was pretty small for $16.
El Anzuelo Fino is a much better Peruvian restaurant in the neighborhood in my view.
