Came here with a friend after seeing her post from multiple trips here. I knew she would know the best vegan places being a vegan blogger herself and my instincts were right!
I tried the avocado fries (amazing! I wish there were more in a serving) and tostada along with a mimosa and americano with milk (I wanted a latte but their espresso machine was down). The atmosphere was relaxed and chill for a Sunday noon and they ended up opening the doors right next to us, but this ended up letting the hot air (and the "city smell" that comes with it) into the restaraunt.
I became a vegan two months ago and when my non vegan friends invited me to this Latino Organic Vegan Spot. I was super excited to go.
We were seated right away and immediately asked for the 2 for $5 empanadas. The choices were the Philly, the Colombian and the Red Beans. They were all great and tasty but I recommended the Colombian. It was delish!
I totally forgot that they had a drink menu so I got the Organic Sangria! This was my first having wine since I became a vegan. It was light and good!
The menu had soo much to order from Venezuelan Arepas to Burrito wraps. I decided to try their kale tostadas and their portobello tacos. I made great choices because I loved it. My home girl got the guacamole with chips and Carne Molina tostada. She said the carne Molina was mad fafafel out lol. I had to laugh.
For desert, I had the choco peanut cupcake. Mmm please try it in my honor :-). The homie got the carrot cake was very rich and good. We also order the hemp ice cream and we didn't not like it. The waitress was sweet enough to void that transaction from our bill. The waitress was sweet and a naturalist vegan like me.
FYI tips and recommendations
1. Public Transportation. You can take the n/r to 8 street. The a/c/f to west 4 and walk to the east side. Also you can take the 6 train to Astor place.
2. The bathrooms are downstairs. The sinks are on the outside.
3. Fyi. Most wine are not vegan friendly. They use fish products to preserve the wine. Just in case you was curious.
4. They gave a glass bottle full of water. its the simple things that count.
5. The tables are too close to one another. That's the only complain I have.
6. Another FYI….a naturalist vegan is when you try to eat foods that are not processed. Like I say I try, its hard to do in the states. Thats why I can't review about the burgers and faux meat.
7. Enjoy!
I'm not quite sure if things got better in the service department because I'm from out of town, but my experience was very good all around. Want something new? Try this vegan restaurant (I went for brunch) with a Latin twist. Food here was tasty, flavourful and original. The tofu scramble and the vegan sausage was tasty and interesting. My guests were happy with their meals as well, the huevos rancheros vegan style was a hit. Serving sizes on the larger side of things and they offer both inside, outside and hybrid (inside with an open door/wall section to the outside) which should make everyone happy. Worth a try.
So thrilled that there's a great vegetarian spot just a block from my apartment. Though I haven't yet dined here, I've ordered delivery. The menu seems to mostly be "tex-mex" themed, with some asian cuisine items mixed in. On my last order, we got the seitan burrito and both tostadas, all of which were delicious. This spot is a great example of vegetarian/vegan done well. The serving sizes are large, the prices are fair and reasonable. And everything tasted healthy and fresh. I look forward to trying more things on the menu!
As the boyfriend aptly puts it, "Places like this make you not miss meat."
My response? "Damn right."
I really like this place! I decided to try get it last week when I was in the area. I have heard many things on various social networks about this place and decided to give it a shot. Being a vegetarian, the menu is definitely overwhelming because literally everything looks so good and I can eat everything on the menu for once. We decided to go with the nachos and the avocado fries and a green smoothie drink.
The nachos were awesome. I would highly recommend them. I initially thought that I would miss the cheese but the vegan cheese is just as good and goes perfectly well with all the other ingredients. The homemade "sour cream" also tastes like the real thing if not even better. We thoroughly enjoyed every bit to the last chip.
We also got the avocado fries due to the high ratings on them. It comes with five or six small fries with a side of their version of chipotle mayo. The fries are also great. It literally is exactly what it sounds like avocado slices with breadcrumbs, deep-fried. I would def recommend this place and I would definitely suggest ordering the items that I got to eat because they were so great. I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!
Second time going there: Don't get the arepa con todo. Wasn't good. Also- service is ridiculously slow.
I want to give this place 4 stars because it's all vegan and conveniently located in the east village, but the service is bad. The menu has a mix of Columbian, Mexican, American and Asian food. You have quesadillas, burritos, arepas, summer rolls and fries. It's quiet the mix, but that's pretty cool. I stopped by on a Sunday and they were featuring a special ramen menu, which was really really good – that chef needs her own spot!
So what sucks about this place – the service. The first time, the server forgot my beer and I had to reminder her twice. My food was also cold. The second time, she forgot the lemon and the hot sauce – I asked a different server as waiting for 10 minutes. My server checked in to make sure everything was ok after we were done, after we waited for the hot sauce and had to ask someone else. What a mess. I think the main server there is just absent minded – they need to fire her.
V-Spot's logo of rabbit-eared sprout leaves definitely caught my attention a while ago, but I hadn't gotten the chance to try them until this week. I'm glad I did. This location always looks sleepy around lunchtime. I popped in for take-out and asked what they recommended: the breakfast empanada, the spinach mushroom ricotta empanada, their summer rolls, their avocado fries. Well, it so happened that their sampler contained all of these, so I went for that even though it came with enough food for 2. My assessment? Yes, get the recommended items. I liked them so much I returned for more today. Of the two empanadas, I preferred the breakfast empanada. With a tofu scramble, possibly colored with turmeric (though this can't be tasted), this empanada is pleasantly soft and creamy (most likely thanks to the daiya cheese) without a hint of soy and with bits of smoky, meaty tempeh bacon. V-spot is the first time I met tempeh I liked. But, if they don't have the Breakfast Empanda, the other empanada was also tasty. Earthily mushroomy- trust me, it's surprisingly difficult to pull off- the cashew ricotta lends a bit of creaminess to this without any odd pesudo-cheese after-taste. The summer rolls are good if you're craving Asian flavors. Their ingredients look typical enough for a summer roll, but they must have their proportions right, because all the vegetables in this really come together to create an light, harmonious summer roll. Lastly, their avocado fries (I can see from their online menu that I'm not the first to discover this) were delicious. It sounds like this could be bad. Imagine the soft texture of avocado meeting a deep fryer, but V-Spot made it work. The avocado in this stands up to the panko-breading and hot oil. These were crunchy and do I dare say the avocado even lent a citrus note to what would otherwise have simply been a typical starchy side dish. Thumbs up for these, I'll definitely be returning for more.
