Vanessa’s Dumpling

“Honestly, I've never tried anything at Vanessa's other than the dumplings and sesame pancake sandwiches.”

“I usually get the boiled pork and chive dumplings, with a steamed red bean bun, and a peking duck sesame pancake.”

“Maybe you can bear to wait a few minutes before diving in – in that case, walk down to Union Square and eat your dumplings on a bench.”

  1. Disappointing, since I've passed by this location many times when around Union Square and was excited to try the dumplings. We tried chicken, pork, and shrimp dumplings to go and were underwhelmed by the thick dough and subpar filling. We could have probably made these from a frozen supermarket box. The seaweed salad was also damp and from a box, as I'm sure all seaweed salad usually is, but it just added more to the negative experience we had here. I would skip Vanessa's and go the extra mile for Prosperity Dumplings, or check out Halal Guys across the street. It's cheap, but not worth the money saved.

  2. Even with the Zagat stickers on the door, I didn't have over-the-too expectations for this place. It's functional, not fancy. I was absolutely delighted with my dumplings! The flavoring was very good, and the sauce was the perfect amount. I didn't have to use any extra seasoning at all–they were perfect. The kimchee was also tasty–it was a surprising mix of different vegetables, and almost sweet. The one negative was the bubble tea–not the best.

All in all, so good! Next time I come I will make sure I am HUNGRY so that I can eat two plates of dumplings!

  3. This place needs no introduction. Specializes in chinese dumplings with both fried and steamed options. Sauces are fingerlicking good. Selection is vast!! After all the struggle, one place that serves some amazing vegetarian options. I am in love with this place. Bubble teas as ok. Jupioca a block down is the place for bubble teas!

If u r in the area, stop by and grab some dumplings here. I have brought 6 people to this location- none of them rated it less than  a 5 star!!!

  4. This location of Vanessa's Dumpling is like the poor stepchild, and she's quite ugly.  But wait — she has great service, amazing prices, and darn good food.

I walked in with 4 co-workers and we expected an extravaganza.  Instead, we have a non-glam, no frills, order at the counter, cheap, no alcohol, and quick food brought to our table in "to go" boxes.  Hardly the makings for something great.  Does Vanessa really think it's so unattractive that people always take the food elsewhere?

Well, friends, let me tell you. Inside the plastic tubs of dumplings in soup, styrofoam boxes of pan-fried dumplings, and paper-wrapped pancake sandwiches came something most delightful to our mouths, taste buds, and eventually, our bellies.  Served with not beer (mmmm), but an assortment of bubble teas…it was quite fantastic, and made the work outing quite an experience, and a fun outing for my group.

    1.  Don't judge a book by it's cover.
    2.  Get it "to go"; get many, and get frozen dumplings (sold in packages of 30).
    3.  Great for students.  The prices are dirt cheap.

    Prices, a sampling:
    ————————-
    4 pan-fried cabbage & pork dumplings: $1.59
8 boiled basil & chicken dumplings in soup: $5.99
    30 frozen chive & pork dumplings: $7.50

  5. I pass Vanessa's dumplings frequently after moving to the area and since it is generally packed, I wanted to check it out and see why. I finally stopped in today and ordered chive and pork dumplings and basil and chicken dumplings. I received chive and pork dumplings and a chicken sesame pancake sandwich.

    I don't regret the mixup.

The dumplings were ok, and for a dollar and change they are a perfectly acceptable side dish.

I really liked the sesame pancake sandwich. The actual pancake was really tasty and the cucumber and carrot with the chicken was great.

This is a solid and affordable place to pick up a meal. I would definitely go back.

  6. This place is kind of like a hidden secret and ordering is a little weird. I couldn't even tell you what I ordered by memory. What I do know is they were dumplings and they were spicy and they were delicious!

  7. As expected the staff here isn't very nice but the food is great. The pork dumplings were delicious and the sesame pancakes were on point!

  8. Vanessa's Dumplings is a popular dumpling restaurant. They have multiple locations. The best way to get to this location is to get off at any train near Union Square and walk east a couple blocks.

It's busy, so you will probably have to wait in line to place your order and/or find an empty table. They have a $10 minimum on credit card. I ordered the eight boiled vegetable dumplings for a little over $6. The portion is good if you're not too hungry but you might want to get an appetizer to make it a full meal. The dumplings are green, and the innards have assorted vegetables. Well-cooked, but nothing special.

It's incredibly hot in the restaurant so dining in the summer months isn't ideal. They also sell frozen dumplings – $11 for 30 vegetable dumplings.

It's a good place for an inexpensive and casual meal near Union Square.
