There's an amazing uniformity in the reviews here. The consensus is that the food is good and service sucks. I'll tone down both ends of spectrum with major caveat.
The caveat is the time I visited – 3 in the morning on the night of J'ouvert. This place is open late anyway, so the hours weren't extraordinary but I suppose I just have lower standards for service after a couple of drinks and a wander around Crown Heights in the middle of the night. The service was indeed slow, and I was served out of order, but I can't say it really bothered me. Seldom have I come out of a Jamacian restaurant in the city amazed at how fast the service was anyway. Also, it being 3 in the morning I clearly was in no hurry.
Now on to the food, which I unfortunately ate most of the next day for lunch (did I mention it 3 am when I went there). I thought the rice was pretty disappointing, and didn't carry the strong spices I want with rice and pigeon peas. Chicken was solid though, cooked throughout the night in a parking lot jerk pit.
There was a solid crowd in here as well, on a night when suddenly every 99 cent store was selling oxtail and curried goat, so they must be doing something right. Service or no service, it generally is the taste that keeps people coming back.
I wouldn't mind hearing from the Yelp ethicists on the etiquette of reviewing a restaurant after attempting to dine there but being rebuffed. When the place wasn't especially busy, several workers didn't take my order and didn't acknowledge my existence. At least one customer who arrived after me was deemed worthy of service.
So if a one-star rating for a restaurant whose food I didn't try is too "get off my lawn" for community consensus, I understand and will hit the delete button. I can say at least that the service is as bad as it gets, and that my original intent was to have some food.
The food is always good and hot. The prices per portion size are honestly a great deal compared to other West Indian restaurants. Dishes are prepared somewhat more rapidly than other West Indian restaurants that I have tried, so you aren't waiting 20 minutes for your order. They also tend to do a pretty decent job of not running out of food before the end of the night which seems to be one of the biggest issues that you face when you visit these types of restaurants later in the evening. The customer service is typical for the Brooklyn West Indian community (take that however you want).
The jerk chicken is very good. It's a nice dry run applied to the chicken and not an overly saucy non- authentic taste and feel. The curry goat is also a must try. I'm a big fan of sweet plantains but I must say that there's are very average. They're not bad but not as good some other places that I've tried. Meals are also typically served with a little "side salad" aka some lettuce a tomato slice and a bit of cucumber packed atop your rice and peas.
4 Stars because the food is good.. The lines in there is always ridiculous and chaotic. You can't tell who ordered and who didn't order. I find myself moving through a sea of people asking them if they ordered. When you place your order you can stand and wait maybe 30 minutes to get your food. No exaggeration… People come in and order food and its large orders and then they skip people and give other people their food.. I always give them a piece of my mind if i stand around and wait too long for my food.. There's no reason to wait that long.. If you dine in you will get your food much faster than take-out. Other than that the food is good..
