I've been here a few times with a few people. I've always found the service to be excellent – very attentive, fast, and friendly. Their food is good! Better than a lot of the Mexican I've had in Westchester – and it's definitely different. Last time I went, I had the shrimp tacos with chipotle sauce I think. Although the portions may seem a bit small for others, for me it was perfect since I don't eat much anyway. But it was quite delicious – spicy and juicy and yum. I do quite like their rice and beans. I don't think it's the BEST I've ever had but it's still good! The bottom line is, I haven't really had anything bad here. In fact, the one thing I'm not too crazy about was the vegetable quesadilla but it was still edible. No parking which is just abysmal. The décor is a bit weird…I think they were trying to pull off this edgy modern look and it just didn't work all that well – I think they overdid it. But I would continue going back there.
Very… Average.
The decor is modern and nice, but the food left much to be desired. I had an eggplant dish that tasted more Italian than anything else. The chips were a little thin. The fish tacos weren't bad. For the prices you have here, you are better going to Mango Cafe in Mount Kisco. It's a great place for the atmosphere, but I'm afraid the food just doesn't meet expectations.
Seeing as how I've been to this restaurant an embarrasing large number of times, I can't deny that I'm a fan.
The chips and salsa are probably the best in all of westchester county. It's such a great, fresh taste. The chips are served warm. The lunch specials are particularly great in that all menu items range from $7-$10 and contain an extremely diverse range of options. The table-side guacamole is also some of the best I've had.
My only criticism is that at times, (and in several dishes), I secretly wish there was a more integrated texture in the filling (i.e. chimichanga, taco salad, etc.). I think the attempt to make the food authentic, fresh, and wholesome sometimes overrides the overall congruency of the dish (with lots of different things appearing on the same plate, but not cohesive).
Overall, though, excellent environment, WONDERFUL service, and really authentic food!
After dining at Vega, I'm left with mixed feelings.
The decor of the restaurant was confusing; the seemingly contemporary design of the booths and tables, the waterfall that lines one of the walls, and the low lights overhead coupled with the flashing multicolor lights makes it look like a modern Asian restaurant rather than a Mexican one. The only thing that really showed Mexican was a huge picture of Frida Kahlo upon entering.
They kinda skimped on the details as well – our menus were printed on plain white paper and we also had paper napkins. I realize this isn't categorized as a classy/upscale restaurant but still, one appreciates a legit menu and a nice cloth napkin.
They also came around with chips and salsa for the table. The chips were warm but the serving size was small – really not enough for our party of 4. The salsa was okay but on the saucy side. We started off with nachos to share; they were okay – however I was expecting a large plate to share but instead we got 8 corn chips individually topped with cheese, beans, and salsa with a little sour cream and guacamole in the middle. It was tasty, but when it says nachos on the menu I expect a full plate of, you know, nachos. For my main I had carnitas which came with a side of rice and beans; it also came with soft corn tortillas for the option to assemble which I thought was a nice touch. Food was okay, the pork was fork-tender but the rice and beans which came on the side lacked flavor. Presentation of all the dishes was mediocre at best.
Service was just okay; our sever took a while to take our order and we weren't offered refills on our beverages. Overall the experience was very average – not sure if I would come back.
This is a decent place for a neighborhood restaurant, but I would not consider it a destination place worth travelling more than 15 minutes for. First off..the service really does suck..as other reviewers have mentioned. Place was dead at 4:30 in the afternoon and it still took someone ten minutes to come over. Maybe the fact that half the staff are pregnant and move slow has something to do with it. That being said…the food is good..mexican food done well..with a hint of originality…as with the avocado fritters, which was new to me. I love chimichangas..and I was pleased with their version. Not to expensive either.
This Mexican cuisine in downtown hartsdale is pretty nice. They have a ton of tradition as well as fusion Mexican dishes. I would urge you to try out their home cooked guacamole! They bring out their stations and make it right in front of you! The steak burrito I had were on point. So if your looking for a upscale quiet Mexican dining experience this might be the place.
