Being that I am not a vegetarian, I was a bit nervous about dinner. I like this place, because it's small and very cozy. The crispy nuggets were pretty good. I wasn't impressed with the Nobu Chicken Teriyaki and wound up taking the majority of the meal home so it wouldn't go to waste. I might try something else on the menu if I ever get the chance to dine here again.
I was sad when I noticed that the location on Flatbush had closed but was pleased to see that this did not mean the end of Vegetarian Palate. I have been a fan for years and love their chicken nuggets as well as their pad thai. Will keep going!
I really really did want to like this vegetarian restaurant but I just can't. Most recently I picked up an order of spring rolls. They were mushy and oily inside, and crispy but extremely greasy outside. Not a good mouth feel during… not a good belly feel after, very heavy for such a light food. I don't think I'll be back.
So, so, so good. It was my cheat meal so I definitely went overboard.
Straight up – it's BYOB. SO you can bring in a bottle of wine. I went on a Friday night before a show at Barclays with a friend and the place was pretty empty but the take out seemed to be busy. They get an A from the NY Health Board so that's, too.
Anyway, on to the food!
We started with salt and pepper chicken tenders and scallion pancakes – both were delicious and substantial, the sauces were good too.
He got the chicken vegetable fried rice and I got the mango chicken. Now, I've had versions of mango chicken at a lot of V restaurants but this one was REALLY outstanding. The portion was ENORMOUS. If I wasn't starving and it wasn't my cheat meal (read: I'm eating the whole damn thing) then I would suggest splitting that with an appetizer.
And because I'm a fat kid, we got the brownie cheesecake. I don't even really like cheesecake before I went vegan but this was also outstanding. I ate the whole brownie topping, too. My friend couldn't believe all of this was vegan. So for $40, two apps, two entrees and a dessert, that was REALLY a good meal.
I'm vegan and my friend is GF so we had a lot of restrictions and questions but they were very knowledge of their menu and VERY helpful and kind.
Not sure why GPS still directs me to their prior address when I try to get directions on Yelp(despite the address written).
But I knew better so I google searched it for the proper Washington Ave address.
The food here is still amazing after several years. I got my Chicken Curry. I think I will forever love this as long as they don't change the recipe. What I miss was the broccoli. I think broccoli used to be included prior.
I also ordered the crispy nugget which I thought were appetizers but surprisingly it came with rice and broccoli. Sadly when I got home, there was no sauce on the nuggets. Had to use the duck sauce. Nuggets were delicious but not sure how they expected me to eat dry nuggets with dry rice and broccoli. (1 star lost for that). If there was suppose to be a special sauce…it wasn't included or offered.
The mango chicken seem to have plenty of raves maybe I will try that the next time.
Vegetarian Palate has amazingly good, yummy, healthy food. I've been vegetarian for 8 years and am only now realizing the various ways seitan, tofu, and and bean curd can be cooked creatively and enticingly. I've never ordered food to be delivered from this place, but my sister and I have stopped in on several occasions to have their "chicken" nuggets, fish nuggets, and stewed eggplant. The place appears clean, a bit drab (but maybe they're going for subdued ambiance?), and the service is pretty good. I've never been disappointed and am looking forward to sampling a greater variety of their dishes.
When people say vegetarian food is bad or they can't live without meat, they haven't found the right place. As a frequent customer, I can say without hesitation… their food is AWESOME. They have a variety of vegetarian dishes. My favorites are the mango chicken, spare ribs and Pad Thai. The dishes are flavored with the right amount of spices to make a non-vegetarian salivate. While I never had spare ribs in my life (say what?) I LOVE these vegetarian spare ribs! They are very juicy and are great with brown rice! Other dishes I've tried were the chicken nuggets, duck, spring rolls, and orange chicken. Avoid the orange chicken at all costs. I've ordered it twice and I can't stand the flavor, but besides that, so far I haven't found many dishes I don't like from here. Go wild and try something new! Meat lovers and Vegetarians can enjoy a tasty meal here.
As I have mentioned before the food ranges from okay to pretty good. However being able to order vegetarian Chinese food, gator tots, juices and vegan dessert options all at the same time. Well, tell me where you can do that.
