If you are in the Elizabeth area of New Jersey and looking for some authentic Portuguese food then Verde Minho is the spot. It's located on the corner of 230 Trumbull St. in a blue color section of Elizabeth . The restaurant offers no valet, only street meter parking.
Verde Minho is a small Mom & Pop restaurant that offers at the bar seating upon entrance and a dining room that is partitioned off in the back. The tables can accommodate larger groups. The decor is very basic and offers nothing romantic. Their bar is well stocked and offers some nice choices in alcohol and they also carry a selection of Portuguese wines. The menu offers a lot of nice options from appetizers, dinner specials and desserts.
I came in on a Tuesday night around 8pm with friends from work. The restaurant was pretty empty. We opted for a table in the dining room. Our server was friendly and promptly took our order. He then brought over seasoned olives and fresh Portuguese rolls that hit the spot. We didn't order any appetizers and went straight for the entrees. The kitchen wasted no time with our orders and in about 20 minutes we were served.
Entrees:
Penne Pasta and Chunks of Salmon in a Garlic Alfredo sauce with Broccoli. The dish was excellent and the portion size is enough for two. $15.00. The Salmon was fresh and tender it picked up the flavor from the Alfredo sauce and the garlic. This should be their staple dish…
Bone in Butterflied Sea Bass with Broccoli Rabe $16.95. I'm not one who likes playing with his food and hates picking bones out of his meal. This dish was worth the play. It was seasoned just right, the fish was extremely fresh and the broccoli rabe is the best I've had in a while. .
We ordered no desserts and opted for double Espressos $3.00. It's was good, but the portion is more like a single.
I will definitely be back and recommend Verde Minho to others.
You know those Portuguese chicken places that pops all over? New fashionable places? This is not one of those!
Verde Minho is a Portuguese restaurant and bar that is a true hang out of the portuguese community around. A large bar with a good choice of alcohol and the required espresso machine, a dinning room in a separate room and a few table in the bar. A group was playing card at one of the table in the bar area the night I was there.
I was staying overnight at an hotel near by for a morning flight out of Newark and I was looking for a non-chain restaurant for a late dinner. That area does not have a lot of open places at night to say the least! I found "Verde Minho" all open and lit and I decide to try it despite no previous Yelp reviews.
I was alone and I was invite to sit at the bar with the regulars (this is a portuguese place and the regulars are portuguese and converse in portuguese with the portuguese waitresses…. portuguese enough?).
I ordered half a chicken that came with rice and a large fresh house salad (you can also select fries). I added sparkling water a glass of red wine and did finish it with an espresso… the total was $13.50 including taxes… quite cheap for a good meal. The food is fine but it is not amazing… I have added a star for the authenticity and the nice service.
