Verjus Restaurant

“The most amazing duck liver terrine for a first course, and then the best eggs benedict I've ever had.”

“Been to this place for dinner and brunch (great value at $25 prix fixe) and the cuisine is well presented and tantalizing on taste.”

“The fresh vegetables (ginger glazed carrots, haricots vert, and mashed potatoes) were also better than anything I could ever hope to make, at home.”

  1. Always have excellent food and service at Verjus. I have been coming here for about five years and have had no complaints. The owner is always here greeting you, the wait staff is good.  Relaxed atmosphere, nice that they have their own parking lot. Good French standards and some other creative ones. Died and went to heaven when I had the lavender creme brulee. Decent wine selections. I highly recommend this neighborhood restaurant for good French dining.

  2. Family owned, the matron of the restaurant was sending us off to our table. It was a quiet, simple restaurant with a parking lot, and when I stepped out of the rain, there was a small bucket for the umbrellas and a coat rack behind a screen before you encountered the hostess stand.

Service was prompt, and they do serve, as the resident expert on the table noted, some better beer available, as well as some reasonable wine choices (if you spend more than $100 on wine, you get a coupon the next time you come back, apparently). Pop of bread to the table with butter (I would have preferred olive oil, but I didn't ask this time around).

The appetizers – these change up regularly. I had the smoked anchovies over tomatoes and beets – a fantastic mix of smokey, salty, and sweet together. My colleagues enjoyed their duck pate (and there was a lot of it!), even declining the second round of crackers as it was too rich overall (that could have been a shared dish).

Pan Seared Barnegat Sea Scallops and Fresh Pasta was my main, to which … the seared scallops were a touch dry, and I think waiting on my other dishes for the table, the pasta had congealed a bit and was on the lumpy cold side because of it. Eh. The bright side was that my dining partners enjoyed their of Branzino, almost not finishing it due to the size. While $30 for an entree may seem a little steep (especially for a chicken dish that one of them had), if the dish was hot, I would assume it would have tasted better.

Honestly, I've had better. For the same price, no, but also to find this in NJ was a surprise. The lunch menu, while more limited, looks like a better deal.

The next time we come, we should try more of the escargot and bourguignon, apparently, those look to be the better dishes based on other reviews.

  3. Everything from the service to decor to atmosphere to food to drinks to parking was great.  Waiters are professional, staff is friendly, food is delicious.

  4. Came here for lunch. The menu for lunch is very limited which was disappointing.  That being said I had the Niçoise salad which was very good! The bread was also outstanding, a real french baguette.  For dessert I got the lavender creme brûlée, the consistency was perfect however the lavender was over powering ruining the taste.

  5. What can I say… if I died and went to heaven, they would be serving Verjus all day and night. Favorite restaurant. Period. Family owned business, everyone is chatty and personable, right down to the waiters (some of whom are part of the family). Service is prompt and attentive. Everything is held to the highest, most impeccable standard. I've been here at least 10 times (I'm not made of money) and have yet to be disappointed. Every time I go out, if it's not Verjus, I'm missing out.

Want to know more? The menu includes some classic French-inspired favorites but has a rotating selection of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Everything might come off the shelf on any given day, including white truffles. If you want your favorite dish and it's not listed, the chef just may have it in back. A cozy place that tends to fill up on weekends, so go on a weeknight to enjoy a truly personal and fabulous experience. I've never gone wrong with an appetizer or entree, and as for dessert? Perfection in every selection. I'm not exaggerating in this review. There's a reason my grandparents, with limited mobility, will still make an effort to go out here.
