A classic and quickly disappearing old school vegetarian restaurant in NYC. Great vibe. I had the distinquished pleasure of eating the internationally acclaimed black bean burger. The burger itself was was excellent and very flavorful.
I have to take off a star, for the soggy bun that came with the burger–the bun turned to wheat paste in my hands-come on folks: you can do better than that. In a town with Sullivan street bread and little Odessa's brown bread mecca–there is absolutely no excuse for soggy buns). Putting their bean burger in the bun they gave it to me is as jolting as dressing a gorgeous man in sweatpants. When you go in, please ask the to toast the bread.
A really good veggie burger. I am not a huge fan of fake meat but I like the dressing here and the veggie burger. I also like that as the West Village changes this place stays the same!
Decent local place for ordering in. They have a wide variety of vegan dishes made out of seitan and wheat gluten.
I ordered the grilled salmon with a side salad. I liked it. It was simple, fresh, nicely crisp. Nothing exceptional worth going back for, but it's good to know you can get a good and fresh salmon steak.
It came with "garlic bread" -what a joke! They must have ran out of bread the night we ordered because came in with my order some sandwich loaf bread (yeah, the type of bread you use for peanut butter and jelly) and that was toasted and covered with garlic butter…. I mean, it's cool to do when you are at home for your family, but that is not food you serve out of a restaurant kitchen. Just saying…
Very interesting Vegan/vegetarian place in the west village. Looks sort of old inside and service was a little spotty. I thought the salads were very delicious and worth going for, but also tried the egg sandwich which was lacking flavor.
Quinoa kale salad with the carrot ginger dressing was great, I would definitely order this again. I asked for the soy chicken to be added on top, but it came out on a separate plate and did not look appetizing, but was surprisingly tasty.
The egg sandwich wrap (brunch/breakfast option) was lacking flavor and came with salad and a side of chips. The tortilla chips tasted super old and as if they were from the bag a week ago.
Stick with the salads, and I've also had the salmon here and you'll be good.
Hidden gem. Had the black bean burger without the "bacon" and it was homemade, delicious! Salad dressing is made in house and it's also very unique – some kind of oil free carrot thing, very light. Organic wines at a good price, too! Atmosphere was a little loud, but it was a Saturday night. In any case, I will definitely be back!
The appetizers were great, we had leek dumplings, and spring rolls. My entree was pretty bland…I had tempeh with vegetables over coucous and it had no flavor whatsoever.
Accidentally walked into this place instead of Greenwich treehouse (upstairs). Once we realized what was going on, we decided to stay for a quick bite. Hah, gotta love girls… we're always hungry!
Impromptu dinner or not, I'm glad we stopped in here because their steamed whole wheat veggie dumplings were just what I needed before a long night of drinking. Small and not too heavy, but just enough substance to keep me from getting drunk too quickly. Didn't get to try anything else on the menu since by this point we were running late meeting our friends, but I would definitely return for the dumplings alone.
Great restaurant in basement of bar. Place was empty when i walked in. Gloomy and dark with little outdoor lighting.
It was large, and sadly empty when i arrived at 2:45pm.
Browsing the menu i saw good prices (GREAT for NY).
Very ample menu w/ vegan and non-vegan options for picky eaters and regular eaters alike! Different themed meals, Mexican, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Salads, Crepes, Paninis, Soups, Breakfast foods, you name it, they carried it. Also had a wine and beer list for the grown ups.
i ordered their soy protein in citrus sauce over a bed of lettuce with a side of brown rice and broccoli. I also ordered a diet poison but the server informed me that they did not carry diet coke but rather Hansen's Diet Cherry Cola. I was somewhat happy about.
My meal was good. This place is under the radar (literally! under ground!) and under rated! i would definitely eat here again. If you want foo foo decor and a barely above average meal go to The Candle Cafe, if you want inexpensive good quality vegan food in a not so appealing bar-type atmosphere go to the Village Natural Cafe. Neither place was outstanding, and both are on opposite sides of town, but for the prices Village Natural wins with a landslide (though Wild Ginger beats them both by a Mile!)
