Came by Village due to the awesome reviews, and my wife and I had been wanting to try it since we got our home in town. I've always been a big Zappia's/Vita guy, but Village's reviews warranted a visit.
I got a slice of Buffalo and a slice of plain. A classic, plain slice is always a benchmark for a pizza spot, and Village's was just okay. The sauce was a bit bland, and the flavor didn't hop off like at the other two places in town. The buffalo slice was decent, but it had tough competition with Zappia's. In this case, and in my personal opinion, Zappia's wins out here: spicier, more wet (I hate dry buffalo slices), and more flavorful than Village's offering.
I'd definitely go Pizza Vita and Zappia's over Village for quality of pizza. However, Village had some really unique offerings in their pies which I'll definitely come back to try again.
I don't understand the rave reviews of this place. The pizza simply is not up to the level of Casa di Pizza in Westfield or Pizzeta in Millburn, which both have the same basic concept of several types of pizza available by the slice. I have tried the chicken ranch, the "Grandma's" and the barbecue chicken. I found the crust to be dry and uninteresting on all, and the chicken overcooked on both containing it. Service was distracted. Will avoid this place in favor of the other two, hands down.
In a sea of unexplainable bad pizza, The Village Trattoria has some of the most consistently good pizza around. The service is always friendly and accommodating for take out and when we dine in the small dining area we have always had great service. We typically order plain pies, but I have tried the chicken parmigiana pizza and it was done right where the toppings are not flopping out onto one's trousers.
The pizza here is quite decent. I always ask for a nice crisp bottom on my slices and they consistently deliver. The quality of the sauce and the cheese is excellent. Flavor is on par as far as decent pizza goes. I would definitely recommend giving them a try.
It's nice to see that they offer some gluten-free options as well.
Had the Farmers Pizza and the Arugula Salad Pizza. My spouse had the Fried Calamari Pizza – who doesn't really like pizza but really liked this place. What I really liked about this place was that the food was very lite, nice portions, and full of fresh flavors. Yums!
My 2nd night at Overlook Hospital after having my son and I wanted some good food (hospital food is so depressing). So hubby went out and picked up tortellini and a Greek Salad from Village Trattoria. First off, the portions are huge. Second, they were delicious. I'm picky when it comes to Greek salads but theirs was top-notch with tons of feta, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. It was excellent. The tortellini with marinara sauce was also great and totally hit the spot. If I lived nearby I'd be a frequent customer here. At the very least next time we're in the area I'd definitely consider stopping by for lunch or dinner if I'm craving good Italian food.
Sam has been talking this place up for as long as I have known him. He's always told me that they are known for their specialty pizzas, his favorite being the buffalo chicken pizza. I wouldn't normally order this slice, but because he praised it so much I had to order it.
The pizza came out of the oven almost immediately and they brought it to our table. I covered the slice with parm and a little granulated garlic. The first bite out of the slice was awesome! I loved the cheese and whatever amazing white sauce that was drizzled all over it. Very good! The chicken was perfectly breaded. The only thing off was that the chicken meat itself tasted a little old, like leftover refrigerated chicken. Besides that though, I really enjoyed the experience!
My optician has his office across the street from this restaurant. He knows that I like pizza, so he suggested I give it a try. It's narrow dining room and tight seating gave me pause but as I walked in past the display cases full of food, I forged on. Two plain slices and a cola – my standard order – arrived quickly. Wow! The crust was crispy, sauce full of flavor and just the right amount of fresh cheese – an outstanding slice of pizza. I have revisited several times and my experience has been the same. This small shop makes outstanding pizza! My wife heard me rave about the pizza and she has joined me a few times and she has tried their more ambitious slices. She likes their chicken slices and their different salad types too. All in all, our several visits have resulted in great lunch experiences. They show quite a few interesting italian dishes on their chalk board menu and, some day, I may explore a few if I can drag myself away from the pizza.
In New Jersey, pizza places almost outnumber gas stations so if you don't make a good product, you disappear. It takes real skill to stand out from the crowd – the village trattoria stands out!
Friendly staff. Wonderful pizza. Fair prices. Give it a try.
