If a restaurant smells terrible the first moment you step in, you probably should not eat there at all. This place smells the worst in all Chinese restaurants I have been to. It's gross.
I only ordered a roast duck salad and when I was eating it, I couldn't engage in my conversation with a friend very well. The reason is, I couldn't stop thinking getting food poisoning again after I saw the oily finger prints around the edge of my plate. Salad didn't taste good either. Although the staff was very friendly, it's still a bad experience.
I hate to deduct stars from restaurants but the fish was just not fresh on my last visit and that's simply unacceptable, especially at a sushi establishment.
I ordered the spicy tuna roll, assuming it would be a safe bet. Their yellowtail and scallion roll has never done wrong my be before so what could happen, right? No, I didn't get food poisoning. But man was it funky tasting. Really, really funky tasting.
The seaweed salad was just as unappetizing – very soupy – as was the garden salad. And the shrimp shumai was way overcooked; It could barely hold itself together.
I'll probably be back just because graduate-school-beggars can't be choosers on a Monday night at 10pm after class. But please, step it up, Vine.
I ordered a Philadelphia roll and fried Gyoza for take out. I'm usually not picky about my sushi, but I wasn't impressed by the Philly roll. It was a small roll, salmon didn't taste too fresh and it had unidentifiable/tasteless green stuff in the roll. Maybe I'm used to the more fuller rolls from restaurants in Queens. The fried Gyoza I ordered was barely fried. It was as if I was eating steamed dumplings. Definitely disappointed by that.
Overall I would order again just bc the menu is so extensive maybe I just made a few not so worth the $12 choices.
I go here often for take out and delivery. I've been here once to dine in with a friend but it's more convenient for me to just grab and go. It's a good date spot or even just a night out with a friend though. The atmosphere is everything I'd expect from a nice sushi restaurant. It's quite large and open. I would say it's a popular place to go for lunch if you're in the Columbia University area.
I'm a vegetarian so I always order tofu curry and rice. Occasionally I get wild and order avocado sushi. I have no complaints about what I've tried. I can't speak to the meat and fish dishes but I do know they have a lot of them!
I get that this is a cheap place to find quick food at a OK price, but that's literally all it is.
Good luck trying to find something that's ACTUALLY vegetarian – beware, as most of their dishes have SOME form of fish sauce/broth/flakes in it, somewhere. Only finding this out after ordering their tofu app with fish flakes on top, I got nervous and checked with my main meal (udon noodles with vegetables). And lo and behold – yes, it did have fish in it.
When I complained, A- they didn't apologize, B- they blamed me for not saying something to them, and C- they said that it DOES state on their menu that their "Agedashi Tofu" comes with fish flakes. Maybe they're blind too, because all I see on their menu is "Agedashi Tofu
Fried tofu with tempura sauce." I can't believe I had to argue as hard as I did to get those taken off our bill.
I think the only reason this place is still in business is because Ollie's had that unfortunate fire. Granted, I doubt there would be anything vegetarian there either.
Annoying 10 dollar credit minimum. – I am not a fan of places that charge you to do business with them. If they want to sell stuff and accept credit then fine – but do not charge me for the operation of your business.
I walked out when I saw a minimum.
The Vine is your average sushi place. Nothing bad, yet nothing I would go run and tell all my friends about.
Since I use to live in the area, I believe it was one of the only sushi places in the neighborhood. I love sushi, so I didn't have much of a choice — unless I wanted to travel far for sushi. Their prices are pretty good, especially their Columbia Lunch Box special for about $10. It's pretty good and a good amount of food. It comes with miso soup, salad, white rice, and California Roll. Super standard.
I've gotten the shrimp noodle soup before and it was gigantic. An incredible portion that could have been probably shared. Their bubble tea is also pretty good. Lots of different options, so you best try at least one of them.
Other than that, service is okay, atmosphere is this cliche, and prices are not cheap but not expensive either. It's the kind of place you would go to if you were stuck in this area and craved sushi. Nough said.
Not sure why vine had such bad reviews – for an Asian fusion place on a college campus, it's great. I was expecting a hole in the wall sushi joint with high prices, but vine is quite refreshing!
Good decor – makes me feel like I've left columbia for the rest of manhattan. The service was fine, forgettable at best.
I've gone several times and had the bumble bee roll, thai mango chicken, sesame chicken, and pad Thai. The pad thai was the worst – bland sticky noodles. Everything else exceeded expectations though! Especially the mango chicken.
For apps, def get the chicken teriyaki dumpling! Spring rolls are good too.
Skip dessert – it's nothing special. I had the green tea fried ice cream and it was eh. A little strong in the green tea flavor.
