  1. Have you ever had a hot date lined up that you're all super excited about?  You get there and she's sitting at the table in dimly lit romantic lighting, looking fine as hell.  You can't believe your luck.  This is going to be the best night of your till now meaningless life.  And then, she speaks, and all you hear is Fran Drescher going "Oh. My. Gawwwd." ††

That's what dinner at Walter's felt like.

At first, we felt like we hit the jackpot.  When we walked in, it was pleasantly buzzing, sexily lit, and felt like it had the right mix of cool and laidbackedness. †††  The staff was pleasant, the crowd was at the right level of hipness and age… everything felt just right.  And then, sadly, the food came…

    1.  I have never tasted a more bland duck bun
    2.  The duck wings tasted like burnt, crisp nothing.  The serving had 3 wings, for a party of 4, and one was left back.  At this point, they need to give up on duck entirely.
    3.  The charred octopus was not really charred.  It seemed like it was breaded and fried or something.  Definitely.  Not.  Charred.
    4.  The flourless chocolate cake crumbled and tasted like dust.  Tip: if it keeps coming out this way, use flour.

The saving graces were the mains.  The fried chicken was decent… points there.  Moist, flavorful… however I was not a fan of the dipping sauce on the side, whatever it was.  The chicken was good enough on it's own.  This dish literally saved the meal for me, and I clutched to the memory of it for dear life as I picked my way through dessert.

So in the end, points for atmosphere, scene and fried chicken… that's 3.  But if you want my opinion, walk an extra 10 minutes and go to Marietta.  You'll be much happier.

†† Yes I just aged myself right there.  I'm old.  Go youtube or vimeo or whatever it is you young 'uns do these days for references you don't get.
††† I make up words when it suits me.

  2. I came here for Saturday brunch. The wait wasn't bad at all. I got here around 2 pm and waited 20mins for a table for 4 people. I got the egg Benedict with ham. Honestly, nothing can go wrong ordering that right? The egg was runny just the way I like it. It was the English muffin that was annoying. It was hard to cut with the knife they provided. I also got to tried the chicken waffle. It was delicious. They gave you maple butter. The chicken has a hint of spicy. It was a great combination. Overall, I enjoyed the food there.

  3. I do enjoy grabbing a dinner, quick snack, or breakfast here at Walters when I visit New York.

The food is absolutely delicious! Their fried chicken is the best I have ever had! Not really a fan of the eggs benedict, even though my sister loves it. I'd come here for the oysters anyday. They have some delicious deviled eggs as well.

This place has a Speak Easy/Prohibition feel to it with the decoration, and I've never been disappointed with the customer service, behind the bar r at the tables. Their customer service is beyond none, almost as good as their food! The waiters and the bartenders always have a great recommendation or make an amazing drink for us.

The only thing that prevents me from giving them a five star, is I just feel like the space is so cramped. It's so popular here that they want to seat as many people instead of making them wait  (which I absolutely love) but it just means you are suffering elbow space and often conversation with your neighbors.

Other than that you should definitely head to Walters! If you don't you are missing out on a truly amazing experience both culinary and personal.

  4. Had an awesome lunch here today!
Ordered the BLAT along with a Pomegranate Lemonade.

BLAT was their take on BLT + Avocado and was amazing. The bacon was delicious, smoked to perfection, and had a rich flavor rare in a traditional BLT. Fries that came with it were amazing, skinny, crispy and tasty. Pomegranate Lemonade was the real deal, tasted fresh, tart, and refreshing.

Atmosphere of this place was super cute, trendy, and clean! Even the bathroom smelled nice thanks to a cute little candle. Love the weird tiling on the floors and the mismatched chairs throughout the place. Bar area looked interesting and offbeat as well.

    Will definitely be back!!

  5. We had late reservations for a Friday night (10pm) and although our table wasn't quite ready yet the staff was friendly and accommodating and set up a makeshift table for us while we waited.
We ordered drinks in the bar while we waited, and everyone was satisfied with their selection. Personally, it was the best Pimms cup I have had in a while, they are pretty hard to come by in the city and this rivaled the ones I have had in New Orleans. We ordered and shared the special salad which had watercress, and roasted winter veggies like beets and cauliflower along with pepitas and a cheese of which I was not familiar with. Since it was late I didn't want to order a full entree but ordered from the 'bar snacks' portion of the menu which was $5 each for wings (2 to an order) and boneless ribs (3 to an order). Both were delicious, hearty and satisfying, I couldn't finish either. The ribs were especially amazing with what I figure was a homemade BBQ sauce. The wings were good, unique with a sweet and spicy red sauce.
Overall I had a great experience and hope to return soon!

  6. Came here a while back after a game at Barclay's.

I tried the clams, octopus, and fried chicken.

Clams had sand in them – not well cleaned – did not enjoy.

Octopus was really oily… but not bad. It was pretty charred so it altered the texture a bit – making it more mushy than chewy.

Fried chicken was probably the best part of the meal. Came with mashed potatoes.

The inside was darker than a bar. Literally the only source of light was a tiny votive candle on the table for 6 people. We almost fell asleep. All in all, did not leave much of a positive impression. The prices are pretty high – but given the neighborhood it's in, it's expected. Cucumber water was a nice touch, I guess.

  7. Just finished brunch:

Great atmosphere, attentive service, good music.

    Now to the food:

Burger – excellent!  Juicy with a lot of flavor.  Meat lovers rejoice!

Shashuka – good but nothing special.

  8. Update! Finally got back here for dinner. Split the duck buns (tasted like chicken salad sandwiches somehow- but delicious regardless) and the pork rib bar snack thing (which was BOMB) for appetizer. Also sipped on the "gold rush" cocktail (whiskey, honey, lemon) which was delicious and ice cold.

For dinner I had the fried catfish with slaw & some type of chipotle mayo dip, yum, with a side of the Brussel sprouts (they were decent but had a ton of pickled red onion slivers in there- not my favorite thing ever. Wanted more savory). My friend ordered the burger with fries and more or less cleaned his plate.

Ambience: dark, candlelight, great service, and great music (90s hip hop mostly) playing softly in the background. This place genuinely doesn't disappoint (was packed on a MONDAY night at like 8pm) and I will be back again and again.

    Salute, Walter's!
