Let's go deep on the name. It's not a place or a city. It's not a cultural artifact or something that you only get in a country. No, it's "We Are Georgians." This is a place defined by the people inside.
The restaurant, such as it is, feels like a kitchen lifted from a provincial capital across the world and placed in Brooklyn. When I was there family members were on both sides of the space that divided the employee area and the part for customers. Some were eating, others were working. Some who started out doing one were doing the other by the time we left.
Our primary waitress – this is one of those old school places where it appears that the women take the order while the men bring the food – was all smiles, with gentle inquiries about how we knew to come this far out into Brooklyn. I told her about my experience in Georgia a few years back, and how I've made it a small personal mission to try as many places as possible.
The best news I had for this woman was after the meal, where I'm happy to report this is my favorite khachapuri in the bourough. It combines real fresh from the oven bread (a nice oven is paramount when making the dish) with salty cheese and butter. Sure, it's decadent – the dish that makes you wonder how anyone eats in Georgia for more than a week – but oh so tasty.
The khinkali, with their Hershey kiss swirl tops and fragrant mutton inside, also were on point.
It was just my sister and I so we were limited as to what we could have. Besides those two dishes, it was simply a big bottle of Georgian mineral water, the very popular Borjomi. We even had two slices of khachpuri for a very, very good late night snack.
In the middle of Brooklyn, there's a bangin' little restaurant called We Are Georgians. It was my first experience having Georgian food and it definitely won't be my last. I'm not even fully sure of everything I ate but all I know is that my meal was basically awesome.
The food was amazing! Now I have no basis to compare but the entire experience was delightful! The owner/chef took care of us the entire time, recommending dishes and personalizing our menu! We had a really delicious cheese and pomegranate dish that really blew us all away. I would come back here in a heart beat. This place is a gem in Bensonhurst!
