I don't usually like hot food bars in Manhattan, but was so happy when Well Green Market opened on 42nd street, only steps from my work. It is clean and has so many food options – hot and cold bar, as well as sandwiches and salads. I will normally spend around $8 at the hot food bar and can get a variety of food; my favorite is the stir-fried noodles, soy sauce chicken with a side of salad and fresh fruits.
In the morning I get my oatmeal and fresh fruit to the sound of classical music playing. It is also a small grocery store, so after work I've stopped by for anything from olive oil to fresh basil.
Don't expect bargain basement prices, but the prices aren't that much higher than other places in Manhattan. I was hooked on Pellegrino soda for awhile, and would come here almost every day for that. They have fage yogurt, and a large selection of organic snacks. I come here for tea in the afternoon, for a chocolate croissant when I have a craving and I got flowers for my boss here as well.
Welcome Well Green Market!
Note: "Well Green Market" is now called "Merci Market"
We were walking by here this afternoon and couldn't resist going inside. The store just opened three weeks ago, and what a great place! It's larger than it looks from the street and the interior is attractive & spotless. All of the employees were quite friendly and welcoming. The salad bar is only for weekdays, but there are many other temptations: dozens of different sandwich options plus wraps, paninis, grilled foods, stir-fry foods, soups, smoothies, beer (imported & domestic) and probably some other things that I missed. They also had lots of nice flowers for sale, and there's a small area with tables & chairs. They have free delivery, they do catering, and they're open *24 hours/day*. I only wish they'd open a store like this on the Lower East Side….
(Update on 9/16/12): Yesterday I noticed that they have an "A" rating from the Health Department.
