  1. Lacryma Christi! Not a curse nor a lament, it's the name of my favorite red wine (literally means Tears of Christ), made from grapes growing on Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. After my last trip to Naples, I was hooked and it wasn't so easy to find in NYC (I can't find it anywhere in New Orleans, sadly). Enter West Street Wine.

We go way back. When I worked at a bar nearby 5 years ago, this is where I'd stop on the way to work to have my own provisions for the night (the bar I worked at had shitty wine) to share with my good friend, who was also the sound guy. We'd drown our sorrows as we watched whatever shitty band or comedian I had booked on a Tuesday night, not unlike Christ crying over Lucifer's fall from heaven, lending divine fertility to the soil that would later be mixed with ash. Then we'd drink another bottle as we walked home to Brooklyn, all the way from Downtown, through Chinatown and the LES and over the Williamsburg Bridge. Once there, we'd be so sotted that one of us would climb to the top of the damn thing. Which one? Hint: not the one wearing platform boots. THOSE were the days.

I stopped in to West Street Wine most recently when staying with my friend who lived in the area, grabbed two or four bottles of Lacryma Christi and relived old memories. A reasonably priced red table wine, West Street charges a fair price, as I've seen it sold for as much as $5 more a bottle elsewhere.

I also stopped in here on for my New Year's bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte, also at a good price. I figure they can charge more because it's pretty much the only liquor store in the area. And oh, they deliver, too.

  2. I hadn't been here in a long time but I like this place as soon as I set foot in it.  Greeted warmly by the owner who makes me feel welcome.  All questions answered with knowledge and a great deal of insight.  Selection is pretty good for a neighborhood wine store.  Prices are reasonable.  Nothing exotic there but a solid bunch of wine available for purchase.  I'd come here again.
