  1. This place rules. Granted, they are a bit pricier than your down and dirty supermarkets like Associated and Pioneer, but their extensive selection of gourmet crap really makes it worth it.

Their biggest high point is the cheese selection, arguably the best on the Upper West Side. They have heaps of the good stinky stuff from France, Britain, and Spain, many that I've never heard of, and all of which are delicious and fresh. You can also get a good deal occasionally since they run sales from time to time. Their produce and deli departments are also pretty solid. I've recently picked up sirloins here and they were top quality.

On the downside, like most markets of this size, the mass manufactured goods (like cleaning supplies and canned items) are a lot more expensive than you'd expect at most major stores They charge $5 for this one OJ, which is highway robbery, since I saw the exact same thing at Target for $2.50. But, what can you do…there's no Target on 77th and Bway.

One big bonus…I saw Bookman from Seinfeld here! I really should add in the 5th star just for that alone.

  2. Don't get me wrong, this place is a good market, well stocked with fresh produce and dairy, but they don't really have an organic section, therefore they lose essential points compared to Fairway, 2 blocks south. Prices are comparable, but the selection is not as rich.

  3. For what it's worth, they have everything! We were in town for a week playing the role of New Yorker so we had to find something to fill up our kitchenette in the hotel room. After carousing a bit we decided on some fresh fruit, 3-liters of water and pre-packaged desserts.

The layout of the store is nothing like I am used to (super cramped) but I adapted. Also the staff aren't very friendly but perhaps that's my California perspective. I can and will definitely go back.

  4. This is a wonderful place.  I decided to stop here rather than Zabars just to see what's up and I was so pleasantly surprised!  Their cheese offering is smaller than Zabars but pretty amazing.  They have local specials as well as a french goat cheese I bought and was very satisfied with.  Their prices are cheaper than other markets in the area and their stuff appears fresh.

Also, I decided to take a chance on their homemade ravioli.  It was incredible!  I will definitely be back to get it again.

  5. I used to live right around the corner from here – Westside Market was the friendly neighborhood market that carried both essential grocery items as well as gourmet/specialty items; if I needed anything in particular, just put in a special request and they will help you out, by either shipping it in for you or helping you locate it.  They have a bakery, a cheese section, organic foods, prepared food, fresh produce, and a salad bar.  Prices are comparable to other neighborhood markets.  If you check their website, they update it with some family recipes that you can try at home.  I usually buy milk, cereal, bread, eggs, fruits, and vegetables.  If you're not eating out in the city and would like to make something quick, Westside Market can help you out. 😀

  6. Westside Market does stock everything I needed to make a dinner for friends. All the vegetables and accessories like heads of garlic, lemons, raw herbs. They also have in plastic cases nuts and dried fruits. They also have grind spices. The bananas were a just right in rawness green. Fresh items like leeks, carrots, potatoes, radishes, scallions were being delivered at about 10pm during my shopping. I don't take the market to be a health store, though the market does carry lots of vegetables, because I didn't see organic labels for any of the vegetables or fruits. They may have been but not too many labelled as such to the eye.

The deli stocks numerous selections of precooked choices like potato salad and prosciutto is like $24 a LB.

In the back one can find items like canned good, bottled liquids like vinegar, frozen items and dairy items. That is also where the grains and baked good items are like Crisco for $4. I also notice they didn't have any whole chicken over 5LBs, most were under 5LBS. Cuts of salmon were in handful size pieces at $5-6 each.

It's cold in there. I rushed through most of the shopping because of that.

Prices are not cheap nor majorly expensive, though again – fresh. I didn't see any "On Sale" items but there were a couple of two for $2, etc… It's not a large market at all but it does have everything I needed.

Check out was fast, not that many shoppers at around 10pm. One of the produce guys deserves a raise for helping me find a veggie I could find. Oh, items are marked, say heads of garlic were by the entrance all the way on the bottom where they would  be expected near the rest of the vegetables, he helped me find them.

  7. This place….for 6 months, I lived 2 blocks from here. I made many inebriated 4:30am trips here with friends. Their prepared food is awful.

  8. I finally gave up going here. They never carry the produce I want (Kale, Swiss Chard), the workers are not helpful, and the prices are very expensive.

I am not impressed by their fish, cheese or meat, and their bakery …sucks.

But it is in the no mans land between Fairways, so I understand why it gets so much traffic.
