I came here with a large group of cyclists over the weekend. The menu is typical diner fare, no surprises on the menu. The staff was friendly and efficient. We took up two tables and there was about 10 of us. We placed food and drink orders and the drinks were out immediately and the food was not far behind. I have no idea how they cooked everything so quickly. The staff also came around frequently to refill water glasses, etc.
Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and we got a smattering of breakfast fare: pancakes, eggs, potatoes, toast, etc. I got a blueberry muffin, which was sort of stale and a slice of chocolate layer cake, which was decadent and delicious. Another nice thing was that although this is a diner, they let us linger for a bit without hassling us – when you are out on the bike for hours and want to soak up being inside in a heated space, we like places that aren't in a huge rush to get rid of us. I now see why this is a destination on many bike rides – good food and good service. It seems simple, but so many other places screw this up.
So, I came here with my brother for lunch today. When I first proposed coming here to him, he said he'd been here already and wasn't impressed. Of course I wanted to try it out for myself, so we came to have lunch. I should have just listened to him. This was by far one of the crappiest lunches I've had in a while.
I ordered a burger without a bun because I am on a low carb diet. When I asked if I could substitute something for fries, our waitress insisted there was no substitutions. I told her I would pay extra and she was adamant about insisting that absolutely no substitutions could be made. I find it extremely rudimentary when restaurants, especially diners, refuse to make a substitution. How is this good customer service?! So, whatever-I just barked at her to leave off any potatoes as I cannot eat them. Then I had to separately request that a pickle and coleslaw be included (as per the menu-it doesn't just come automatically). My brother ordered some sort of panini that sounded decent, I can't remember what it was.
When the food came out, I was even more displeased. I had told myself in my head that regardless of an ignorant waitress, I could at least have a yummy lunch and let bygones be bygones. This lunch was far from yummy. The burger was overcooked and oddly shaped (it was long and oval shaped as opposed to being circular) and because of this odd shape, the measly 2 pieces of American cheese they had melted on top barely covered it. It really just looked like a sad, sad presentation of a lunch. The bacon on top of the burger was also very overdone, so it was hard to cut through with my knife. The coleslaw that was served didn't look like cole "slaw" at all. Coleslaw is shredded cabbage, this was extremely tiny pieces of cabbage and carrots that were diced up as if being served to a child still developing teeth. I didn't even bother to ask my brother how his food was, his fries looked decent enough and he brought home 1/3rd of his panini to have later-so I guess it was good enough to want to eat the rest of it at a later time.
Overall, I was very put off by this diner. I am a huge fan of North Jersey diners, and I never have high expectations for them by any means. This place, however, set the bar pretty damn low. I most definitely will not ever be returning.
its very quaint inside, definitely like a country house. Seemed a little dingy and dirty to me, but still nice. Menu is very standard, definitely come here for your comfort food fix. They have a "Lite menu" which is the only healthy thing i found on the menu and it was pretty good. I got the chicken breast with fresh fruit salad and my mom got the tuna salad (without mayo). We both enjoyed our meal surprised that it was actually fresh. My meal was overcharged by $1 but no big deal. Our waitress was a Greek grandmother who was nice 🙂
This has been one of my local go-to diners for almost 20 years. It does what diners are supposed to do: serve up large portions of basic, good food with little-to-no frills and even less worry about calories or cholesterol. The staff is appropriately gruff, as they should be in any self-respecting NJ diner. The food is good in all respects.
