  1. White Star boasts the best burger in Jersey City. Well, honestly, this is the only hamburger I've ever had in Jersey City, so, based off of that, I'd have to agree! It was pretty tasty, I have to say.

A friend that lives in J.C. invited me and another friend out to her area, and this place is a nice 10 minute stroll from her apartment to a very quiet, homey area of the city. The interior was woody and warm, filled with young couples and adorable children out for Saturday brunch. We were seated in a booth in the rear, and we were handed a brunch menu. Though there were the typical brunch options (eggs, eggs, eggs, and eggs), I had to give the burger a try! I opted for it, topped with caramelized onions and aged white cheddar. Another friend got the burger as well, with cheese and bacon. The burger, composed of Pat LaFrieda beef sandwiched between a Balthazar bun, was a treat, indeed! Though a little thick, the burger held together well, was flavorful, and was cooked to a perfect medium temperature. The fries were great, too, though some were a little overfried. Also, in a move that I so rarely see nowadays, my soda was refilled for free without me even asking. Thumbs up!

White Star gave me that feeling that I don't get from many restaurants in NYC: it felt homey, in an "everyone knows your name" kind of way. (Hey, "Cheers"!) I felt comfortable, at ease, and got to enjoy my meal without feeling rushed to get out. I'm so glad I got a chance to enjoy this place!

  2. The place is very cute, but overall it looks to be more bar centric vs. food.  The brunch menu was very under whelming in terms of selection and offering; nothing that stood out as "wow I really want to try this!"

We came here for brunch (only because we've been at our go-to spot, SAM AM 3 times in a row and needed a change lol) to find it not very crowded.  Anyways, judgement aside we proceeded to order the Bacon Mac'n'Cheese for me and my husband ordered the Kale Hash with a sunny side up egg.

My Bacon Mac'n'Cheese was very cheesy, but pretty standard.  I could have made it at home, there was just no pizazz to it.  And anytime you add bacon, it by defaults makes the dish 1 star more than it deserves.  My husband's kale hash was also just average, nothing to write home about.

  3. Was visiting a friend in Jersey City who recommended lunch here, and I certainly would agree with that assessment. While not the best burger patty flavor that'll knock your socks off of all time, the quality (and quantity) I had on a weekday lunch was very good. What makes it appearing is that they have Pat LaFrieda burgers on their menu, so that is already setting some standard.

Got the Paulus Hook with fried onions, portabella mushrooms, gruyere and truffle aioli. The ingredients sound fancy, but you get an incredible value and quantity at $14. The fries are also perfect and come in my preferred" double fried" style. The inside seems roomy enough (and according to my friend it's usually consistently busy), but they have outdoor seating options as well which I'd recommend for those relaxing gorgeous days out.

  4. The food here was delicious. We're usually at the Brunswick St. location for brunch, but we decided to try this place out for dinner. I made a 9 p.m. reservation on their website which used Open Table. We arrived at 8:30, so upon walking into the hostess, I told her "we have a reservation for 9, but we're early." She tells us to stay put while she got the general manager who told us that they couldn't locate our reservation, but would be able to accommodate our party of four. Confusing that they possibly couldn't seat a table of four at 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday night, right?

As it turns out, our waitress was getting ready to seat us at connected tables that would seat 8-10 people. Maybe there was a miscommunication? I spotted a four-seater and the waitress (who was super nice) seated us there instead. Once we were seated, service was moving so well. I recommended their beef dishes to our party as I trust and like the quality of Pat la Frieda, where they get their goodz from. My brother ordered the steak frites, which was deliciously charred on the outside and crispy fries. The rest of us ordered burgers and a chicken sandwich, which we were all fans of.

My one of two qualms is that the plates are so small! I ordered a deliciously moist burger (the Greenville: pepperjack cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato and onion) with fries. And, brace yourself, when burgers are too large to just pick up and bring to my face, I usually eat my burgers with a knife and fork. I KNOW. Anyway, these plates didn't allow for all that knife+fork blasphemy.

Another issue I had was the upstairs seating. We were seated in their 2nd floor loft area which was beautiful and further away from the main crowd downstairs, but the tables were so close to the banister that wasn't really enclosed. When the bf wasn't looking, he accidentally swiped his butter knife which then fell through the little crack in between the crack between the banister, slipped off the floor and could have hurt someone below us. Needless to say, when the ladies on the ground floor looked up in confusion, I was mortified.

Amid all of these clumsy happenings, our waitress (service) and our food really compensated for it all. I will be back to this White Star location!

  5. TWICE! I've been duped. The vent blows cold air right onto you and there is nothing the waiters can do about it, even in the dead of winter. The food (brunch both times) took an hour to come out from the time we ordered. Our orders were NOT yum yum, no sunshine and unicorns here at the end of that long wait. With so many brunch options in downtown JC, I certainly will not be returning again.

  6. I have been here a few times for large group events and really enjoy the atmosphere.  it's larger than the other White Star and a little more upscale.  Drinks are well made and there's a TV set to watch games.  Bartenders and servers are very nice.  Food is good.  There is an upstairs but I haven't hung out there because there is so much seating downstairs.  The owner has helped out my friend with his AIDSWalk fundraisers.  I would go here for that alone.

  7. It was late and I was hungry and this place was open, so you know where I ended up!

This place was actually pretty darn good.

Salmon burger: 4.5/5 – I thoroughly enjoyed this burger. The salmon burger wasn't fishy at all, very moist and the condiments complimented the burger well.

My boyfriend got some blue cheese burger he liked, while my friend got some mac n cheese that was okay! I don't like mac n cheese much but it was good according to his taste buds.

It was a Friday night, not really busy, but a cool place to chill with friends and grab a beer.

Service was good and ambience was cool.

  8. Alas, I did not love this place
Brought a group for lunch based on all the rave reviews.
The food was underwhelming to say the least.  The cocktails were weak. The portions were small.
The price tag however was not.
    Server was polite.
    Space is nice.
I was very surprised at the quality of the food vis a vis the cost after reading such good reviews and more importantly after having visited their other location. Recommending it to my party that came across the Hudson for this 'treat' was a little 'egg on my face' which was better than the one on my plate.
    First and last time.
