Not worth it for the price and portion. $5 for a small thing of fries? $12 for a burger? I know this is Manhattan, but for crying out loud!
Service could have been friendlier and the wait for the food was kind of long.
The burger was nothing out of the ordinary. Juicy, yes. Flavor-wise, unimpressionable. I would have liked to try their other burgers but my first experience was rather disappointing that I am not inclined to go back. What was interesting was that they had a bottle of Sriracha on the counter.
Cheeseburger was very average and rather small for $9. Fries were really good though. Perhaps the cheeseteak is the play here, I wouldn't order a burger again.
This new location of the small East Village burger spot is the most delicious of the several options in the new City Kitchen food hall near Times Square.
The menu is a very small subset of the one at the full location, but it doesn't matter because it at least includes the PB&B: the incredible Peanut Butter & Bacon Burger ($9). As the name indicates, it has two of the best foods incorporated into an amazing burger on a soft potato roll bun. For fans of peanut butter, you will be in love, and even if you don't love the stuff for some insane reason, you can still enjoy this burger because there isn't really too much of it spread on the top bun. It's mostly just a really solid bacon burger.
We also tried the Cheesesteak ($9), which happens to be one of the better versions available in NYC. Both the bread and the meat are so soft the whole thing practically melts in your mouth (in a good way). Definitely try this too.
On the side, make sure you get an order of the Fries ($4), which happen to be really excellent. They are nice and crispy and not too thin nor too thick.
The menu also lists a "special", but I was in too much of a frenzy with all of the other options at the other neighboring stalls to bother to inquire as to what it was (perhaps it was the Juicy Lucy they are well known for?). I'll be back next time to try it along with just their classic Cheeseburger, which is also excellent.
I've been to Whitman's physical restaurant before, but had to indulge myself again. This time instead of their famed Juicy Lucy, I went for the cheesesteak. Notice that they don't call it a Philly cheesesteak (because it's not). But what it is is a ton of chipped beef with onions and American cheese. It took awhile to make, but it was worth the wait. At $9, it's probably the best bang-for-your-buck option at City Kitchen if you're hungry. They also serve beer and wine. Beer is $8 a cup and wine is $9, but you take what you can get.
I've come to this little outpost of Whitman's many times when visiting City Kitchen. Come to think of it…it's pretty much the only place I'll get a meal when I'm here! (Unless 3 Dough Doughnuts count as a meal…) It's a hair small for a $9 price tag, but their cheeseburger is truly one of my favorites in the city. I also love their cheese steak, fries, and bleu cheese fries. The service is quick and the food is food! If I need a quick bite in the area before heading on a Port Authority bus or before I catch a show in the area, Whitman's is my go-to place.
