Alright, they do make good sandwiches. But that line scares me. Considering I only get an hour lunch break during the weekdays, I probably spend half the time just waiting on line and then another 10-15 minutes for my order to come out. It's worth it if you're in no rush. But when your stomach grumbles as you wait, it's tormenting. Ten dollars for sandwich is a tad pricy but at least the quality is a far cry from Subways. I had their roasted pork sandwich and it was delicious. Loved the way they toasted the bread too. I'm only giving it a 3 star because of the long line and I can be a pretty impatient foodie when I'm hungry.
Bryant Park is one of those great locations that serve as an oasis from the craziness that makes up much of midtown Manhattan. Located towards the entrance of the park is 'wichcraft. This small stand works magic within its small space, serving up sandwiches, salads, snacks and treats.
The sandwiches here range from tuna, to chicken to pork. On this particular day I tried the slow roasted pork sandwich. Served on a big sandwich bread, it comes with a pepper relish with fontina cheese. The sandwich is assembled and then pressed, winding up with grille lines on it.
This sandwich is absolutely delicious. The meat is cured nicely and wonderfully tender. It's shredded and blends beautifully with the cheese and relish. The relish gives you a kick and a burn, making this a wonderful experience.
The staff at 'wichcraft is really nice. They're always willing to answer questions, though at times it gets hectic so you'll want to be patient if they're mobbed. There's no seating as it's just a stand, but Bryant Park provides tons of chairs and tables nearby.
On another note, I recently tried their peanut butter cookie and it's wonderful. The cookie has a nice crispiness to it and the peanut butter filling in the center is creamy, salty and sweet at the same time.
'wichcraft is a great addition to Bryant Park. If you're in the area, check it out!
Yes, most sandwiches are just average here.
What was 4 star – ver good: the toasted/grilled pesto, mozz, basil and their meatloaf sandwich!
Stingy and slow are the words to describe this online order experience. We made a seamless order for wichcraft which was simple enough. No special instructions, just a few sandwiches, salads, and 2 sides of beets.
When the order arrived, they left out a sandwich and added an extra side of beets. It wasn't a big deal since all restaurants make mistakes and an item being left out is ordinary. When I called for the missing item, they said they will send someone over with the sandwich but we had to return the side of beets. Okay…you messed up the order and now you want a small side of beets back? Heck, what are they going to do with the beets anyways? Serve it to someone else?!
An hour passed and we finished our lunch but the sandwich still didn't come. I called wichcraft again and they couldn't get hold of the delivery person. Another 10 minutes passed before the delivery person showed up. I didn't even mentioned the beets but figuring how delayed this sandwich was, the beets is the least we deserve.
The delivery person left as soon as he handed me the bag with the sandwich and what did I find on the receipt stapled on the bag? "REMEMBER TO TAKE BACK THE BEETS"
….WOW….
The only sandwich I'll have at wichcraft is their roasted turkey. Pricey (I'm talking $11 including tax), but sooo worth it. I tried this location for the first time and unfortunately, the turkey was super dry. You could tell just by looking at it and the turkey was falling all over the place as I ate it.
This place is also a little confusing to find because the address mentions 5th ave, but it's on 46th street.
This is my favorite 'wichcraft location and you can tell that customer service is just as important as food quality from the top down.
I've never had a bad meal here and like the extra perks that make the meal better than average (think: a bit of parmesan in your tomato soup, gristedes/breadsticks that are delish and come with all soup, special attention to the bread that each sandwich is placed on, special ingredients like pole-caught tuna instead of just tuna). This is a foodies casual lunch place dream. Yes, it's a bit pricey and no, they do not pay attention to the calories on anything (though it's posted) but the flavors and services are wonderful.
Even the beverages are special – white orchard tea and hibiscus iced tea are delicious. They even have local red jacket fuji apple juice…great!
Highly recommended: Tomato soup, pole-caught tuna on multigrain (only place I'll eat tuna because it's "clean" and not mixed with mayo but with capers, lemon, fennel, etc), and any cheese sandwich. For breakfast, the frittata sandwich if you are really hungry or the fried eggs on croissant if you want something flavorful but not super heavy – the greek yogurt with honey and granola is also really great. For dessert: the creamwich cookies, the double chocolate is my favorite as it seems to have cocoa beans in it…but very rich so grab a drink with it. The only item that I never like here is the coffee.
Great place. Favorite lunch spot (the bathroom is clean and the interior is spacious with an upstairs and downstairs, though somehow you can get claustrophobic if you sit there too long). Five star staff, almost five on the food as the occasional day that the staff isn't attentive can go VERY wrong (like whole wrong orders handed to you, but they are quick to fix it).
oh yea – and make sure you get extra breadsticks…to die for!
This is my favorite sandwich lunch place during the week. I work down one block so it's a really easy option for me. I always get their croissant-wich with eggs and aged cheddar, substituted with multigrain bread and avocados added (just ask!). I tried it yesterday with country bread instead of multigrain for the first time and it was equally delicious.
What I like about 'wichcraft is they are fast (I never wait more than five minutes for my order, even during the lunch rush hour); they're made right there as you order (tastes fresh); and there's never trouble finding a table (and they bring the food to you so you can just sit as you wait).
The only issue is prices do tend to be on the higher side — when you start adding extra items, it can easily be $15.
Having read a Serious Eats article about some of NYC's best chocolate pastries and desserts, I read that wichcraft supposedly sells one of the best brownies in the city.
Making a slight detour en route home I stopped by the 5th Avenue branch.
I quickly saw the brownie in the display case and noticed it was a pretty sizeable portion and at a fair price ($3.50) considering the celebrity chef franchise associated to where it's sold.
It was not too sweet; definitely hitting the notes of a darker bittersweet chocolate with a higher cocoa percentage versus a lot of milk chocolate based brownies. I love chocolate of any kind, so it didn't matter much to me, but it was nice that sweetness was not the dominant flavor profile.
Texture was a bit different than a traditional chewy or fudgy brownie as this brownie was clearly more cake like in texture.
I didn't experience all the complex flavors alluded to in the article on Serious Eats, but overall I think it was a really good brownie.
However, to proclaim it one of NYC's best…..I don't think so, but the article was one person's opinion.
At the minimum it peaked my curiosity to try it.
