I was so tired of the choices in Port that the first time I had Wild Honey was for takeout. I recognize that this was a strange and expensive choice for takeout, but I could only order from the other restaurants so many times. I ordered the scallops and a side of mashed potatoes. The scallops were fantastic and whatever sauce/hot eggplant salad-like contraption that accompanied them was also excellent. Mashed potatoes were overpriced and bland (I think $6).
However, the reason for the 3-stars is that I finally got to the restaurant a few weeks later to dine in. I went on Sunday when they had their prix fixe menu. This time, I ordered the fllet mignon (which was at an additional cost, I believe +$5 or so). I ordered my meal with a salad that was just ok, nothing special, but not bad. The steak itself I did not enjoy at all, it just wasn't a good cut of meat. It comes in a blue cheese sauce, which was fine and the portabello mushroom was also good, but just eh, nothing spectacular. My brother got the calamari with his dish, which he did not enjoy (he also did not like his steak). For dessert, I got the berry cobbler, this was good, but again, I've had much better desserts, so just ok. My brother got nutella profiteroles, or some kind of nutella cream puff, which had be frozen without question and he said they were terrible– I honestly wouldn't even try them because they looked less than fresh.
The ambiance of the restaurant is nice– very quaint and romantic, but stick to the scallops and stay away from the steak, just not worth the money.
Sunday brunch review –
Wild Honey is a picturesque little place on Main Street that I've been wanting to try for a while. Sunday brunch establishments are rare on Long Island so I'm thankful for this spot! Our waitress was excellent. Helped us decide what to eat and checked on us just once (I think more than this can often get annoying). I absolutely loved the cornbread and jelly they brought out before your meal. It's warm and smells delicious and made me want to cuddle up in my bed. For brunch, I ordered the frittata and my friend got the Benedict, along with OJ. I thought my dish was just okay. I needed to add a ton of pepper to create some sort of taste. I think it needs more tomatoes or some other ingredient because something felt missing. There aren't many options for brunch, let alone many options sans bacon or ham (not my style), so I am not sure I'd return for brunch. Perhaps dinner…
Be forewarned, Wild Honey is not the right place for those who like an intimate dinner. The table are literally on top of each other. I couldn't even move my foot without crashing into the chair at the table next to me.
The food, however, was unique and well-made.
My friends and I came by for their Restaurant Week selection which was pretty great. Before our dishes were served, we were served warm, freshfresh challah with cherry and sea salt butter as well as a small teacup full of complimentary black bean soup. It was good, but I just wasn't in the mood for it.
For my meal, I had the Crispy Pork Belly with Smoked Gruyere Cheese Grits and a Fried Egg. I absolutely love this combination. A fried Egg, although simple, adds another dimension to any dish. I also tasted my boyfriend's Crispy Calamari with Thai BBQ sauce, Pickled Asian Vegetables, and Toasted Sesame Seeds. It wasn't your typical calamari. Very tender with sweet & spicy flavors.
My boyfriend and I also split the Cracklin' Pork Shank with Creamy Saffron Orzo, Stewed Bell Peppers & Onions, and Sherry Wine as well as the BBQ Glazed Baby Back Ribs with House Cut French Fries and Spicy Coleslaw. The pork was cooked perfectly and I devoured the orzo. The ribs weren't mind-blowing but better than I've had in a while.
I ended the meal with the Warm Upside Down Pineapple Cake with Meyers Rum Caramel Sauce and fresh Cream. Very average. The presentation was lacking. It looked like some pineapples were strewn inside basic angel food cake.
The only thing that would deter me from coming back to Wild Honey is the annoying table situation. Otherwise, a great Long Island meal!
