  1. It takes a fair amount of chutzpah to take a name as iconic as "Williamsburg Pizza" when your location is a well on the way to Bushwick.

But actually the pizzeria inside isn't a provocation, just a slice shop with some upscale pretensions. There are two rows of pizzas for sale on any given day, the top one a selection of pretty traditional round pies and the more interesting half-dozen on the bottom. Any time the least complicated pizza you put out is a basil and tomato covered Grandma slice, you know it's something special.

I went with a slice of cheese for a baseline, and found a no-nonsense but exemplary New York slice. The crust was thin with a bit of char, the cheese salty but not lumpy, and the sauce not too sweet. Very, very good.

From there I moved onto a calebrese, here a dense combination of black olives, red onions, sopressata and two kinds of cheese. That it tasted as light as it did with the medley of ingredients was an impressive feat. Even better was the stupendous taste.

The highest compliment I can pay this place is that I didn't reach or even think about reaching for the salt, pepper, parmesan cheese or hot pepper flakes on the counter, and instead enjoyed the pie exactly as served.

Perhaps the name is so simple because this is the best pizza in the neighborhood.

  2. I am convinced that Williamsburg Pizza has the most delicious garlic knots in the entire history of garlic knots. Fight me on this. You'll lose.

Pro-tip: If you follow or "like" them on whatever social networking platform that tickles your personal fancy, they will give you two free garlic knots.

  3. I've had their pizza twice and I'm sort of on the fence about it.

The first time I tried their classic pepperoni slice and a few slices of their grandma pie. I'm usually a fan of the traditional slice over all others, and the pepperoni was freakin delicious, but the grandma stole the show.

The second time I ordered I got a traditional round pie half pepperoni, half mushrooms and onions. The crust was really, really chewy. Not crisp, not even soggy, but just tough to get my teeth through. Which was a shame, because everything else was delicious. The pepperoni half was the chewer side, the excess liquid from the vegetables seemed to help soften the other half, and that's what I ate the most of. Their toppings are fresh and delicious, it's probably my favorite thing about them. I will order again, I'm hoping the texture issue was just a fluke.

Their garlic knots are also good. You get 4 knots and they are greasy, garlicky messes (in a good way), and come with a side of marinara.

  4. Best pizza. Boom.

I was visiting New York for about a week and was staying in an apartment not 1 block away from this pizza place. I'd pass it everyday on my way to the subway without giving it too much thought as I figured I would save my money and stomach space for some other New York fare. On my last night, however, I decided to end my trip with a slice or two from this classic corner joint. Seeing the signs claiming "Best Pizza in Brooklyn" made a little sceptical, naturally, but checking out their options behind the glass eased that feeling right away. I was expecting the typical mozzarella, pepperoni, and maybe a Hawaiian slice…But I was shocked to see the offerings were very different and, dare I say it, gourmet. I walked in to get a slice and I walked out with a slice of Margarita, an apple, Gorgonzola, and walnut slice, and one other I can't remember but whatever it was, it was awesome.

I walked the 30 sec back home and went to town on these little beauties accompanied by an $8 bottle of Merlot from Trader Joe's. My favourite by far was the apple/Gorgonzola/walnut slice. Goddamn, I dream about that little slice. I meant to save some for my roommate, but he got home late and the pizza was just too good. The area I stayed in wasn't the nicest and was pretty damn sketchy walking back at night, but if I could be that close to Williamsburg Pizza again, I'd risk it. I'll be back soon, my precious apple/Gorgonzola/walnut baby…

  5. I'm so in love with this place. Usually I go for the Tartuffo — which I know is mad over the top. Crimini mushroom fresh mozzarella truffle oil to start. I'm in love with it. Makes me go for runs, just so I can indulllllge.

Other favorites the grandma. I mean. Common. It's fucking awesum. So is the Calabrese – if you're into meat. I'm tryna cut back. But then, there's the Talegio, with said cheese, pine nuts, and Italian sausage.

Good selection of Italian sodas. Give the Chinotta a try.

Service is New York style straight up efficient no bullshit. That's the New York I like. If you want a Disney robot serving you masses of reliability. This ain't your place. It's a mom and pop shop. Love goes into this pizza. And yeah, sometimes they're out of stuff. That's when I try something else. I know, first world problems.

  6. They city has amazing pizza everywhere, but Williamsburg pizza didn't stand out to me.  It was overpriced comparatively, and it was just average.  Maybe I would be more emotionally attached if this was my neighborhood pizza place, though.

I ordered a Cheese slice and a grandma slice.  The cheese slice was the better of the two, in my opinion.  I think it was around $6 for the two slices.  They were warm and good, but again, nothing special.

What was totally beyond me was how packed this place gets.  We waited close to a half hour on a Thursday night, and I feel like their had to be plenty of other close options for late night pizza.

Would I come back if I was starving and in the area?  Sure.  But would I go out of my way to come back?  Not a chance.

  7. So freaking disappointed, when this place 1st opened the pizza tasted good. So I figured I would order a pie. So I placed an order for a grandma pie. Wow when the delivery guy got to my location he forgot my drinks. Not a big deal. So we opened the box and went to work on a slice or two…..what happen to the sauce?  Why is my pizza chewy and hard on the ends? What the hell happened?

  8. Grabbed a couple slices out of curiosity… Not the best pizza, not the worst pizza. One of the slices I chose seemed to have been sitting out for a little while — tasted fine once reheated, though. With only one cashier answering the phone and tending to in store customers, the line got pretty backed up. Not my favorite pizza joint in the neighborhood.
