One of my main go to dishes isn't quite the same anymore. Been ordering from here for a really long time, not sure if the chef changed sometime ago or something else changed, but for quite awhile now the beef fried rice hasn't been what it was. Was hoping it was just a short term thing, but alas, tis not so. There used to be this, not even sure how to describe it, but a smokey (different from bbq) type of flavor that really set it apart from other fried rice. What happened? 🙁
And recently one of the chicken dishes I ordered had some chicken which had an odd density to it. Was tough, but not overcooked tough (reminded me of this one time I made myself chicken which had freezer burn).
Anyways, not sure what's going on here but things don't seem quite the same.
Been coming here for years now ever since they were first wok on 78th and lex. I still call in and have them deliver to my dad for him to
Bring it home to me. They will always have the best chicken broccoli in garlic sauce ever. And they have the best scallion pancakes I've ever had. Lunch special prices are the best, comes with a free can of soda and I absolutely love them.
I live near here and it satisfies my occasional craving for General Tso's chicken nicely. The prices are high and the service is average, but hey – the heart wants what the heart wants. It's American Chinese! Whaddaya expect?
Busy restaurant with adequate food and sizable portions.
I have tried coming here a couple of times since moving across the street about 3 months ago. Surprisingly, last night was the first time I was able to be seated for dinner. This place always seems to be busy, which is great to see for any small local business.
Portions were family-sized so my lady and I split the general tso chicken and beef lo mein. The waiter promptly took our order and reminded us that we got a free soda with our meal, which was nice.
The food was good. The general tso chicken was on par with most places I've tried in the area, and the beef lo mein was enjoyable. There were more than enough leftovers so getting two meals for the price of one is always a plus.
I would come back for another meal, but I'm not certain it's worth a significant wait to sit at the restaurant.
The lunch special on the weekdays run until 4pm. WHAAAA??? It is a great deal for around $8. The hot and sour soup hit the spot like no other on a cold Black Friday. Lo mein portion was more fitting for a family, which reminded me why it's sometimes much cheaper to eat out than to cook at home in NY. If I had stayed in this neighborhood, I probably would be much plumper… what a trade off. In Northern Cali, Chinese restaurants do not have lo mein on the menu.
Mediocre delivery Chinese food. We got:
-Chicken with broccoli
-Beef with scallions
-Sesame chicken
-Egg Rolls
They are not on Seamless (boo) so we had to call and get delivery. The food was just okay. I thought there were wayyy too many scallions and not enough beef in the beef with scallions. I've never ordered this dish before and won't ever again.
We did get three free cans of sodas though, which is nice.
Honestly, if a chinese girl is liking um, white people (sorry) influenced chinese food on the UES, the food isn't bad. I don't know how take out might be, but dining in here at night is quite enjoyable. I walked in for dinner a few hours ago and almost walked out because the AC wasn't on. But, the waiter heard me complain to my boyfriend about it and immediately turned on the AC. The service here is very prompt and everyone is very polite. We ordered the pork fried dumplings for our appetizer, and they were delicious. They were hot, oh so crispy, and the skin of the dumpling was surprisingly thin, considering the amount of meat that they stuffed inside the thing. For our entrees, we had the beef and broccoli and szechuan tofu. The beef and broccoli is honestly one of the best beef and broccolis I've had in New York. No, Wok 88's does not taste like the fast food version. The szechuan tofu wasn't the best, and tasted lots better after I drenched it with hot oil, but the tofu Wok 88 used was of great quality. Usually restaurants skimp out and give you this cheap nasty watery tofu, but not here. I remember from my mother's cooking that they type Wok 88 used are considered the "expensive" silk version people would find in asian supermarkets.
Oh, and free soda or house wine per person if your order is over $10. Unless you're having an egg roll each for dinner, there's no way your tab won't hit $10 a person 🙂
Good Chinese food on the UES. They have lunch specials available on the weekends, which is always a plus.
