While searching for late-night pizza after a night of drinking, I couldn't find anything open within reasonable walking distance on a really cold night. What was open, however, was Wok to Walk.
The menu and concept looked pretty cool and creative – pick out your own combination of noodles, meat/protein, sauce, and other additives in lieu of traditional pre-set menu items.
I chose my combination and then waited for it to be made. The employee who took and made my order was a combination of rude/impatient/difficult to understand (not Asian if that makes any difference, all the workers appeared to be Middle Eastern) which sort of took away from my experience. There wasn't anything in particular he did that was rude, but you know when you get that vibe off of an employee that's sort of like ~ugh… a customer is here~? I know I gave that off a bunch when I worked in retail so I can recognize it fairly quickly. Having to ask him to repeat himself a couple times because he spoke quietly and with a heavy accent didn't make him any happier to serve me.
As for the food – meh. I took it to go and ate it back at my hotel which wasn't too far away. The food was still hot when I got to my room so the quality didn't suffer by taking it to go. I'm assuming if I ate the food right in the restaurant I would've had the same experience. The chicken I had was sub-par and there was more chewy bits that I had to spit out than I would have liked. The sauce didn't really stand out at all and I think I only ended up eating about half of my carton of food.
I don't live or work in NYC so I know I won't be back. But even if I lived there, I'd give tons of other places a shot before I'd head back to Wok to Walk again.
Reminiscent of Mongolian bbq, wok to walk is a customize pick and choose stir fry concept. While orders start at $5, price can escalate quickly as you add more and more ingredients. Be wary of what you add because that $5 base can easily be $10-$12 with just a few add ins.
At Wok to Walk, proteins, noodles and vegetables are selected and stir-fried to order, then placed into a foldable container that makes it easy to bring back to the office.
It's an easy-to-understand concept and the execution is fast as well. I do wonder if the actual final product has wandered a bit farther away from the "southeast asian street culture" and commitment to health that's espoused on the website.
Saying something that comes out a wok is greasy or heavy isn't a novel complaint, but I thought the grease from my saigon sauce was the only main detraction. It was prepared quickly, the ingredients were fresh and well-mixed. The portion size is too much for a weekday lunch, but it's easy to seal the box and eat the rest as a snack.
May I suggest the option of a dry rub to for the grease conscious out here?
This is as close as it gets to Mangolian Wok.
Great food, Good Choices and Decent prices. Not matter what options i get I always go for the "Bangkok and Hot Asian" sauce combination.
This spot always has a line out the door (granted it doesn't have the most interior space)! Your meal is highly customizable, four choices of noodles (or a veg option), tons of choices for meat, handful of sauces to top it with, along with add'l toppings. The line moved quickly, the chefs cook right in front of you with their fancy woks, the cashiers are fast, and the food is good.
Glad I tried it, one of the better, faster, cheaper spots in the area. The thai iced tea is a bit too sweet and has tea particles floating in my cup :-/ though it is priced at $2, competitively cheap.
I would recommend! 🙂
This place is great for a relatively quick and affordable lunch during work hours. I say "relatively" because the line is always out the door, and you'll have to wait about 15 minutes for your food, but it's worth it.
You can choose from 4 different types of noodles and various toppings and sauces. My favorite are the udon noodles. Perfect amount of chew. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. I haven't tried any of the others; I had udon first and if it ain't broke….
I love the spicy Asian sauce and another garlicky sauce. Their system is pretty efficient, though they should probably just take out the tables so people have space to stand while they wait for their food.
One of my favorite Midtown East stops. I have worked in this neighborhood for eons, and this is a great addition. Almost endless choices of flavors, veggies, sauces, toppings, noodle types. Fast and so fresh. Love coming here, and have brough several co-workers over recent weeks. Fresh, clean, super friendly staff – a great lunch spot.
This place rules! #thatisall Simple concept = choose a noodle, veggies, protein, sauce, and toppings… and let the magic begin. Sure, it's counter service, so you either have to fight for a counter table or take your food to go, but the food is tasty! T-A-S-T-Y! Plus, they have 7 or so sauces to choose from, which means you can have a different taste just about every time you stop by!
Oh, and for those who REALLY think they are going to eat here for $5, well you are just plain foolish. The sign is very clear, for $5, you get just one noodle and one sauce–no veggies or meat. So, quit complaining and read the signs that are posted.
Got 10 minutes to spare for a quick on-the-go lunch? Like Asian noodles from different regions? Then, you're in luck!! This is your place! Take it for what it is and try this place! You'll love it!
