I've never had hand-pulled noodles before, but after going to Xi'an's, I wish I hadn't, because every other noodle I've eaten since has been AWFUL. Seriously the best noodles I've ever eaten. Thick, chewy noodles that go perfectly with the spicy spicy broth and spicy spicy um… spices, you really can't get a better bang for your buck.
I picked up the spicy cumin lamb (medium spicy), and it was served up quick and hot and casual – the perfect combination. Super flavorful, with an extra zip (more like a kick in the mouth) of spiciness from the various peppers they use. Remember to mix before eating! The cumin/spices tend to settle. My friend got the oxtail soup (mild spicy), and while it was also very flavorful, you really do need the spice in order to bring out the full deliciousness of the noodles; without spice, the noodles seem overly chewy instead of a respite from the burning spices attacking your tongue.
Overall, fantastic place. If you love spicy foods, and I definitely do, you'll love Xi'an's.

sweet: super cheap, super delicious. tons of options.
bitter: none. wish I had stopped by a second time 🙁
Mmmm Spicy, tingly, chewy, flavorful, delicious noodles. I love the noodles here, they are hand-pulled and spicy. In fact I love them so much that I haven't had a chance to try anything else… Every time I come here I get noodles 🙁
Well all I can say is I will definitely be trying other things on the menu because I'm sure they are super tasty, spicy and flavorful just like the noodles.
And you get the noodles!
I have to admit, I was a little scared to go here. Previous reviews made it sound like the soup guy from Seinfeld. But the counter people are perfectly pleasant. They're business-like but they have to be.
So the food: the lamb burger and spicy hand ripped lamb noodles were even more amazing than I'd expected. The mouth-feel of the noodles, the level of spicing, just amazing.
The vegetarian dumplings though, they were not good. Mealy filling inside a very nice dough. And the spicy cucumber salad was just fine.
We will go back, and I'm guessing more noodle dishes will push it to 5 stars.
Immediately after you walk into this place, you can smell the strong aroma of cumin. We came here for a quick bite before dinner and ordered the lamb burger since it smelled so good throughout the store.
The lamb burger is sorta a misnomer. There are no toppings other than meat! No lettuce, no tomatoes, just lamb with a little bit of onions and jalapeños. The burger is really oily though. Good flavors, but just too much oil for my liking.
Love how quick, easy, and delicious this place is! Must try at any location their all yummy! We have the spicy lamb with the think white noodles 🙂 yumm
Definitely check this place out, its pretty cheap too for NYC
I am not quite sure why people get so bent out of shape about this place, or in general. This is a NOODLE SHOP, so just to set expectations, here's loosely how it works:
1. You wait in line. (It's popular.)
2. You place your order. You may or may not get world-class service at this step.
3. You find a table. You may have to use all of your New York City guile to get that table. (It's popular.)
4. They call your number, and you get your noodles.
5. You eat your noodles, perhaps next to someone you don't know.
6. When you are done, you stand up, and bus your tray.
Here are some notes on what I ordered over 3 visits:
– The cumin lamb burger was great – on one visit, the bun was a little stale.
– The pork burger is also very good
– You can generally get noodles with or without soup, I kinda preferred without.
– One visit I got oxtail noodles – the oxtail was a little challenging to eat, but it was worth it because it was so tasty.
– Another visit I got cumin lamb noodles – also when I got the cumin lamb burger. It was a little too much cumin and lamb, but that was my fault, not theirs.
Very flavorful food.
I got the cucumbers $5 for a small plate. Lots of hot sauce and spices, crunchy cucumber.
Lamb dumplings -very flavorful sauce, i like the slight vinegar to it, but the skin was too thick.
Dipping the cucumbers in the dumplings sauce made the cucumbers perfect!
These noodles are way too long, and I could do with way less oil, but:
concubine chicken noodles (+spicy), spicy lamb noodles, spinach dumplings, spicy lamb dumplings were all moderately priced and majorly delicious. I never really have time to run over here, despite it's relative closeness to my office because it's just far enough away that I would have to take a cab, or catch a bus back in order to still have time remaining in my lunch break to enjoy and digest my food.
Have never been to any of the other locations, but have heard better things. Could go for some of those lamb dumplings right now. They were without a doubt my favorite thing I tried.
