I like good Mexican food (Tortilleria Nixtamal is my favorite choice nearer to where I live in Queens) – but the south Bronx is pretty far from my normal turf so I turned to yelp for advice. I was hungry enough to eat nearly anything, but Xocimilco was a great find.
It's definately a local place; the jukebox was off but a loudspeaker in an apartment across the street will the place with latin music. Fortunately my waitress was pretty friendly. The food itself was great… I had three grilled steak tacos that were really deliscious. The salsa that came with them (two varities) was really good as well. They weren't the cheapest at $2.50 each but they were probably worth it. I also had a Coke in a real glass bottle (with real sugar too, no HCFS) – which is always nice.
If I'm every back in the area (not all that likely, really, but still)
I'm not sure it's worth a trip from Manhattan (although it's not that hard to get too) – and probably not from Queens – but if you are in the area this place is definately worth checking out.
I, too was charged a "tourist" tax, but these tacos are the real deal! So fresh! So flavorful! Get the chorizo ones, yummmy!
Xochimilco has helped make this my Summer of the Taco. And oh, what a glorious summer it has been. I've only ever ordered delivery from Xochimilco, but the food arrives promptly and still hot. My favorite tacos are the carnitas and el pastor – and at $3/each, they're definitely worth the price, because each taco is huge.
Make sure to get an order of guacamole, and be aware that "spicy" means SPICY. Just the way I like it.
I don't know how to pronounce Xochimilco but if your Coochie needs some Milco, I can only imagine that this is where you'd come, so to speak. The guys here seem like they'd be more than willing to provide your coochie with some of their Mexican Leche.
What to get: Chorizo Taco.
What else: This is my 3rd ever NYC review. Woot.
I stopped by here as part of the Bronx leg of one of my NYC food tours, and I ordered Chorizo Taco. After all, who doesn't want some hot, salty Mexican sausage in their mouths? Am I right?
The tacos were excellent. Some of the best I've found in NYC, and certainly my favourite that I've had in the Bronx. Don't be fooled by the rocks that I've got, I still, I still food tour in the Bronx. Used to eat a little, now I eat a lot. No matter where I go you know I love Chorizo.
My fave Mexican in The Bronx is over at El Atoradero, but this place is right up there, and for tacos, I wouldn't recommend anywhere in the area more highly. Dirt cheap as well, so stop by here and see what you've been missing. Put that Mexican Sausage in your mouth.
