I have a hate and love relationship with this restaurant. Its small, yet cozy, warm and inviting. On the weekends they seem to make their money from pick-up orders and not dine in diners. I usually go on the weekend and there's usually 1-2 tables tops on a Saturday night which makes you question if its worth staying. Nevertheless, I always do because I love the food. They provide complimentary Haru Maki (deep fried vegetable rolls) to start. They are ok, not the best or worst either just very very crispy with not much going on.
So I ordered the garden salad – wasn't good, just blah
Spider appetizer (deep fried soft shell crab) – delicious!! Crispy, meaty and full of flavor and texture.
Yami Roll ( Shrimp tempura, avocado, topped with spicy crab and crunch)- My favorite, but its small and not filing
Shrimp Teriyaki- Small portion, Overcooked but tasty
Mouchi green tea- frozen solid, but tasted good
What I dislike about this place is the small portions they provide and lack of good service. For the price they charge, they should give more food, I usually leave satisfied but never stuffed. Why is service so crappy if you only have 2 tables in the restaurant to tend to? I used to waitress so I know it's not that difficult. If they can improve on those 2 things, the ratings would change drastic for this place, not just from me but from fellow yelpers as well.
This spot is super average/borderline a little below. The place is small and we grabbed a seat in the back. We ordered up four rolls thinking that would be more than enough for a light bite for two people. It wasn't since these rolls are teeny tiny. Not a lot of fish, not a lot of rice, sloppily put together, they all pretty much fell apart upon eating.
They start you off with a microwaved fried veggie roll. Nice touch, but not really. The fridge opened and I peered inside to see the frozen packaged bags of gyoza and shumai, so there's that. The rolls took forever to come and when they did, we were surprised to see that they weren't overflowing with delicious fish, but a bit meager. They were good, just small and not cheap. Usually when you order a special roll off a sushi menu, your eyes widen with anticipation since at $15 a pop they are a meal in itself. Not so much the case here.
Definitely not a horrible spot for sushi, I just think you can do better.
This place was ok. Very small sushi joint and it's enough to fill your sushi cravings. There were only 2 waitresses the night we went, which was enough since the place couldn't really fit too many people running around. Anyway, we ordered the Yamada roll and Park Avenue Roll. Both rolls were ok. The tuna in the yamada roll didn't taste as fresh and looked kinda dry. The overall presentation of the food was great but I have to say that I have had better sushi elsewhere. The service was ok…we didn't get our teas refilled and weren't offered a refill or water. The price was decent but I'd much rather pay the price for something a little bit fresher.
This place is not ideal for groups of people and is just a spot to help fill your sushi cravings if you live close by. This place seems very ideal for take outs as there were many patrons who came in to pick up orders.
Such cute cozy place in downtown Rutherford close to rt 17 and 3 if you are driving and also close to the train station if you are using public transit. We walked in at 2:45 and realized they were closing at 3 pm for lunch break. They accommodated us and kept the restaurant open until we were done with our lunch. Their lunch specials are awesome be to box also comes with miso soup for $11. Also ordered yami and Steve rolls which were both amazing! We will be regulars at this sushi heaven!
I normally give very good reviews, but here goes.
Since it was my first time at Yamada Sushi, I asked the server several different questions about the sushi rolls. I finally decided upon the special "One" Super Dynamite Roll $11.95. While I was waiting for my entrée, I was given a complementary miso soup. This miso soup is usually complementary in most sushi restaurants.
A very large sushi roll platter was served to me.
While eating this large sushi roll, I was not thrilled on the quality of the sushi. I continued to eat and realized there was a second type of roll in front of me. I asked the server what I was eating. He told me I ordered two rolls. This was not true. We did have a brief exchange of words. Anyway, it appeared that the sushi chef might have been the manager. He told me I would only be charged for the one roll. The server did apologize.
The one plus is this small restaurant is clean.
Just want to say, I didn't take the remaining sushi roll home with me. Despite this situation, I am a generous person and gave a three dollar tip along with 2 Stars.
The whole Park Avenue area of Rutherford appears to be really booming now. I hope management gets more organized with service and food quality.
So my review is going to be a little bit biased, because I've been coming here for about 10 years. I started coming here when I was in high school and I have not stopped.
The most important thing to talk about is the food (sushi and Japanese dishes).
So far, everything that I have eaten is yummy, fresh and pure sushi. The plating is beautiful. The colors of some various roles are enough to admire.
But, this is all about the taste. Tonight I had the Tempura tofu, Yamada salad and the appetizer sashimi. All delicious and worth the money. I'd give this place 5 stars if it wasn't BYOB.
If you want QUALITY sushi and food, not quantity (Nizi), then you must try this place out.
This is a cute little hole in the wall in the town of Rutherford. Sushi is delicious, this is the second time I've been here in a while and the quality has remained consistent. Waitstaff is attentive, we got a spring roll appetizer included with the meal and they offered us ice cream that was included at the end of the meal as well, my kind of restaurant! Will definitely come back again, food is great, price is right and waitress was very attentive!
So I wanted "ramen soup" and I yelped around my area and found this place. So I called and placed an order and they said "25 minutes"….ok no problem!
So I ordered the following:
Ramen soup which comes with an egg. It had a nice spice to the soup and the egg was cooked all the way….it was good but the sushi it came with was NOT GOOD. It came with 4 pieces of sushi. A salmon, a tuna, a white fish and a shrimp…..they were all dry and not fresh. Let's say I wouldn't go back here for sushi.
My husband had the udon tempura soup which had a nice spice to it as well. It was good, but the tempura shrimp it came with was very bland.
So overall soup was just good. I would give 2 1/2 for the soup only but the sushi did not impress me at all.
