Come hungry and with $5 in cash. This was my first experience with NYC food carts and I'm pretty impressed. So much food and super flavorful.
Around New York Presbyterian Hospital, there really isn't a whole lot of eateries to choose from especially if you are dining alone and just really don't feel up to sitting solo at a restaurant. I decided to stop by this halal food cart because I was starving and didn't want to spend much. Plus I haven't had halal in months.
There was a short line even though it was close to 1pm but it moved at a fair pace. I ordered the mix combo (chicken and lamb) over rice with extra white sauce and hot sauce whited costed $5. The portion was humongous. The lamb was better than the chicken. The rice was seasoned with (I think) cinnamon and not in a good way. It really overpowered everything. Bite after bite, all I kept thinking about was cinnamon. It just didn't work – at least not for me.
A lot of food for a great price. The taste just isn't my jam though. Will not be returning.
As I just walked along 69th Street, I came across this wonderful cart. Conspicuously placed at the corner, the concept is simple: delicious, cheap, fast savory food. And all true.
It's $5 in cash for the rice dishes on the menu. They have lamb or chicken over rice, with side of salad/carrots and peppers/onions. They also have gyros, and interestingly, hot dogs and fries.
In any case, the chicken with rice dish was extraordinary. I've never tried, but if I did, this is what I envision crack cocaine to be like. I could not stop eating until the entire container was devoid of any content. I thought I tasted traces of cinnamon in the rice. And the chicken was so well-flavored. Get the dish with the white and red sauces on top. Spicy with hint of yogurty goodness.
Avoid going around 2pm unless you want to stand in a line two blocks long, really really good platters and sandwiches here. A huge fan of this cart and apparently the entire staff at the surrounding hospitals are as well.
Love this food stand. $5 for a huuuuuge portion of chicken and rice with some salad on the side. Ask for extra white + hot sauce! Also love that it's so close to where we live. The lines can be longer depending on when you go (surprisingly shorter at 12:30 than at 2pm).
Very different from the rest. From the seasoning added to the meats to the vegetables used to sautee with the meat.they added broccoli, bell pepers, olives so delicious. A carrot slaw that had some notes of sweetness to it. To the rice that was delicious. 5 dollar platter. Uhhh what a steal. You need to try this cart. I usually never get chicken but this chicken was sauteed to perfection.
The Halal Cart at York and 69th (aka Big Boss) is one of the few Halal stands that I have found remarkable enough to write a review. The first thing that struck me was that they dont use the standard halal syrofoam container. They actually have partitioned spaces for salad. Big Boss is remarkable for a few different reasons but the one that stands at the forefront is their spiced rice. There's a heavy hint of cinnamon that's not too overpowering but definitely harmonizes with the combination of lamb and chicken. 5$ for a combo plate.
The chicken over rice tastes is more like pulled chicken slathered with bbq sauce rather than grilled spiced chicken. Not what I was expecting. Rice is delicious with hints of cinnamon though!
