Solid burger joint located on the corner of Nassau and John St in FIDI.
For those of you who care, all of their beef, poultry and pork are humanely raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics from a family of farms. They are also open for breakfast and serve ORGANIC COFFEE.
The menu is pretty straight forward.
BURGER: Sirloin or Kobe Beef
HAND CUT FRIES: Idaho potatoes or sweet potatoes
They also have a veggie burger, turkey burger, and chicken sandwich.
I would love to come back and try the Kobe Beef burger. While I'm a fan, I do think the prices are a bit steep.
The cheapest burger is the 1/4 lb sirloin at $11.00 when a Shack Burger is only $4.55 (double at $7.10). With the new Shake Shack that just opened at the Fulton Center, I'm not going to have a tough time deciding where to go when I need a burger fix.
I was also surprised to see the CHICKEN SANDWICH at $14.50! I don't think I ever have and ever will pay that much for a chicken sandwich.
The most expensive burger is the 1/2lb KOBE BEEF BURGER at $19.95.
At that price, you might as well go to Minetta Tavern and get their BLACK LABEL BURGER for $29 including fries!
SO OVERPRICED! I came here on a whim and will not be back. $12 for a pretty small burger and $1 extra for CHEESE! Who charges extra for cheese? Would rather make the long walk to shake shack where the burgers are better and they don't charge extra for the cheese. I also felt sick after eating the burger, so something tells me the meat wasn't cooked right…
I've been wanting to come to Zaitzeff for a while, but I wasn't sure given the 3.5-star average rating.
Finally decided to come yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised…and surprised that their Overall Yelp Rating isn't higher.
Things I Like about Zaitzeff:
– Meat Quality of the Burger is very good
– Portuguese Muffin is m tasty and is less bread
– use High Quality Vermont Cheddar
– use Grey Poupon for mustard, which I really like
– Both Idaho Fries & Sweet Potato Fries are Homemade on a Skillet and are very good…and I don't even really like fries or potatoes that much
– Like that you can order 'Mixed' Fries – both Idaho & Sweet combined
Things I Don't Like about Zaitzeff:
– Pricey (1/4lb Burger is $11.00 and 1/2lb is $17.50)
– Very Busy at lunchtime with long lines
– Very Small with only a few tables
Overall though, I really like Zaitzeff and recommend them if you're in the Financial District and want a slightly different kind of burger and want homemade fries. It is pricier, but then again, you're in downtown Manhattan so, you kind of have to expect that.
I definitely Recommend Zaitzeff.
Went there then decided to try to be healthy thus chose the chicken salad with avocado. It is the most expensive grilled chicken salad I have ever had. Period. But it is probably my fault bc why go to a burger place for a salad.
When you walk by it smells great but I've eaten her a couple of time because the smell brings me in but this place is overpriced and flavorless.
The guys making you mean are super nice and serve from the depta of there heart. But that does not change the fact that the burger meat has no life, no flavor, no taste. Its for the palateless tasters who don't like spice, salt it flavor.
They should take this joint and move it to um…Iowa. Wyoming, Idaho.. It may do better there but I think they also eat bison and I'm pretty confident they season it to.
I was wandering towards the subway late one evening after a long day of work and was thinking about how I wanted a burger. At that moment, I looked up and saw Zaitseff.
I ordered a cheeseburger and fries. I did not go for the Kobe burger, I think all of that is nonsense. I just got the regular burger, with cheese, of course. The burger and fries came out pretty quickly and it was all pretty good. I did find the fires to be a bit greasy, that said, everything tasted homemade. Those fries did not appear to come off of a food service delivery truck. One thing I did not like was that a burger, fries and a coke was almost $16. Seems a bit steep to me.
In the end, the food is pretty good as is the service and they are open late in an area that basically shuts down at 6pm every day.

I have not seen or heard anything about this small burger joint but it's definitely a hidden gem. I had the 1/4 pound sirloin burger ($10.95) + avocado ($1.5) + bacon ($2.5). The Portuguese muffin Bun was great alternative to usual bland meat holders. It's crispy crust and lighter, sweeter inside held everything without fail. The burger was cooked medium, relatively big in size, but it was packed too tightly making it a little dry. There was no condiments on the burger. It does come with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The bacon and avocado were good additions. The $5 mixed fried were delicious and plentiful. There are skillet fried extra crispy. They don't have any seasoning which I really like. The place is a no frills sort of place to get a decent burger. The only downside is its kind of expensive.
Zaitzeff is a cute burger shop tucked away in the middle of the financial district. It's warm and homey feel provides a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of downtown Manhattan.
I've been sampling a ton of veggie burgers lately, and I would have to say that this is one of my favorites. The flavors in the veggie patty came together very nicely. I would, however, prefer less avocado. It's too mushy and overpowering for my liking.
Warning: some of the burgers can get pretty expensive, with prices as high as 19.50. (a veggie burger alone is 8.75)
